I want to waffle about No I'm Not A Human, mostly about the setting and how familiarity amplifies the horror for me.
Many largely known horrors are usually set in the US and as a Polish person I don't relate to the characters at a deeper level.
For NINAH it's the opposite. I live in a remote area in a single story house. My room used to have patterned wallpaper, wall unit with matching wardrobe and of course, a cross above the door. The protagonist's home is very reminiscent of mine, as well as my relatives'. Hell, we used to have the exact same washing machine in our tiny bathroom, it only lacks a rectangular tile stove.
The other horror game I can recall evoking such familiarity is From The Darkness by N4bA, another Russian developer. The block of flats and the flat itself very much remind me of the one where my uncle used to live in.
Another point is the characters, I have encountered many people like them. The neighbor feels like an uncle and his daughter is like a young cousin that sometimes visit you. Cashier Girl and Coat Guy as they're most likely my peers and I find myself relating to them strongly. Bar Guy copes through alcohol, he may be jaded but he is a good person against the dehumanizing paranoia of Visitors.
Many of these people are troubled, suffer from both mental and physical health issues and are marginalized because of it. There's already a struggle of judgement and distrust and the crisis makes it much much worse.
I don't know how to conclude this. But I feel like I was starving for a horror like this, because it showcases personal struggles in a great way. I am looking forward to the full release.
So I'm finally updating this... Like i said i would... Like a year ago(・–・;)ゞ
