nine-thirty

         In honor of Jandek's show here in Cleveland tomorrow night, I've been going through a few albums of his again, including the above pictured Nine-Thirty.

Even if yr not familiar with his music, you might have at least some knowledge of his story. The reclusive outsider artist, know to the world at large as "Jandek", has released over 60 albums of material since 1978. He runs the mysterious Corwood Industries, which releases only his music, and keeps his life story extremely hidden. He only started to perform live over the past decade, being officially referred to as the "Representative from Corwood Industries". You can check out Jandek On Corwood, the relatively recent documentary film, over here.

          His album covers give you a pretty good idea of what the music often sounds like. Barren, isolated, creepy. Out of focus, unconventional. It's a fucked up form of folk music, out of tune, discordant, and repetitive. To most people, it probably doesn't come close to whatever "music" is, but for those willing to spend the time with it, Jandek's music is something totally unique. Listening often borders on the voyeuristic, as his music comes across as deeply personal, something that you feel like you maybe shouldn't be listening to. Regardless, it creates an eerie atmosphere entirely its own, one worth trying at least once.

So I guess tomorrow I'll get to see the man in person, just him and his guitar. See you tomorrow Mr. Representative.
