The 2004 titans (minus the Kikanalo.)

-Dume was designed to look incredibly old, with most of his organic components having rotted away and decayed by this point, having been reduced to effectively a robot. Very much an effort to bridge the Miramax and toy designs.

-Much the same for Nivawk. He’s a big, scary bird thing, though I did try to give him a bit more color than the original set ever had.

-Nidhiki draws a lot of inspiration from Just-Rube’s take, combined with the animation model and a bit of the Bionicle Heroes design with a mutated version of the more traditional Volitak design because I know the Kualsi was intended to be Nidhiki’s mask originally but hey, nobody told me I couldn’t work backwards. I like to interpret him as a walking, talking tumor, the brains of the operation but also in constant pain.

-Krekka similarly attempts to bridge the gap between the original toy and his animation model, the latter of which is far easier to read as a character design. It was an interesting experiment in making a bulkier, stockier character design, which isn’t exactly my strongest suit.

-The Ultimate Dume is a set that I have an immense soft spot for despite its faults and I felt I really had to give it its due. Drew some inspiration from this revamp on Reddit plus the way Makuta’s eyes were drawn on a single page of the comic circa 2003, and otherwise really leaned into the idea of this being a bunch of corpses haphazardly blended together. If Makuta’s 2003 titan form is Ganondorf then this is Ganon-- specifically the huge, silhouetted, monstrous Ganon from OOT. Rather than just the MOL design with wings, I can easily imagine this monstrosity looming large over Vakama, hopelessly outclassing the Toa of Fire in terms of sheer power. He’s a perversion of the concept of the Toa Kaita-- multiple bodies mutilated and forcibly merged together to grant power to one consciousness instead of three minds working in conjunction towards a common goal. Not unity, but domination.

Useless conspiracy theory: Krekka’s design was inspired partially by G1 Soundwave. They both have big, blocky body types with a dark-blue and white coloration, a ranged weapon over their right shoulder, and a single big red eye (or visor in Soundwave’s case). They’re also lieutenants to the main villain...

People have joked about Nivawk basically being Laserbeak (evil black and red hawks that spy on people for the villain), and Nivawk also debuted alongside Krekka as part of the 2004 summer Titans wave....!

Makes you wonder if Nidhiki was based on any Transformers characters... Someone from Beast Wars perhaps? Maybe Waspinator because they’re both green, insectoid butt monkeys who are looked down upon by their own villainous factions, albeit for different reasons? If so then Nidhiki and Krekka are kind of a reverse of Waspinator and Soundwave’s power positions; The green one is in charge and the frightening strategist, while the blue-and-white one is the utter loser.
