How to Read: Step by Step Instructions to Reading for Pleasure

Tara, a reader’s services advisor at the Talking Book and Braille Center, a former youth services librarian, and longtime lover of reading will lead a hands-on interactive discussion on how to read for pleasure. Open to all; avid readers to beginners, all ages and reading levels welcome (note that children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).

eLibraryNJ and OverDrive Open House

Join us at the library for an informal and open session that will help to familiarize you with downloading e-books and audiobooks via the OverDrive app on your portable device! Bring your own Kindle, iPad or iPhone, or Android device and any questions you may have! The library will also have a few different devices available on hand to experiment with.

Please note: In order to use eLibraryNJ through the New Jersey State Library, you must be a New Jersey State Library authorized user (State employee or Thomas Edison State College staff member or student). To get a New Jersey State Library card, you can apply online. Your local public library may provide access to eBooks and audiobooks through their own platform. Contact the Reference Department with any questions.

Introduction to Proposal Writing

This newly revised class will provide you with an overview of how to write a standard project proposal to a foundation. It will include:

The basic elements of a proposal

The “do’s” and “don’ts” of writing and submitting a proposal

How the proposal fits into the overall grantseeking process

What to include in a standard proposal to a foundation

Tips for making each section of your proposal stronger

What funders expect to see in your proposal and attachments

Tips for communicating with funders during the grant process

How to follow up whether the answer is yes or no

Please note, this class will last from 12:00-1:30pm.

LibraryLinkNJ is delighted to announce the launch of the 2013-2014 Mobile Project, NJ Libraries On-The-Go.

The second round of this popular and successful project is open to member Public, Academic, School, Hospital/Medical Libraries and Library-Related Agencies and will expand and enhance the number of member libraries that have a mobile presence useful to, and used by, their customers.

We’ve added a fourth vendor to the mix – Guide By Cell – have empowered libraries to consider local ILS vendors with mobile options, and have established an extended timeline to lower barriers to participation.

Timothy K. Quinn: Mover & Shaker

Princeton Public Library's own Timothy K. Quinn has been honored as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker for his exemplary work leading the effort to serve Princeton by re-opening PPL in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. For two days, the Library was the only public facility open in the town.

He says he tells staff and community members that the library is a first responder of a different sort. “I saw the storms as an opportunity to serve and that libraries are indispensable to lives in our community—and to lives in any community,” Quinn says. 

Many NJ libraries filled (and continue to fulfill) similar roles in the immediate and long-term aftermath of the storm. Thank you all, and let's hear it for one of our own -- we're so pleased to see you honored!

Vineland PL's Book It! 5K Fundraiser

The Book It! 5K for the Vineland Public Library was an idea proposed by one of our teen volunteers, Erica Coslop, as a project for earning a Congressional Award. After hearing about recent library budget cuts, she thought organizing a 5K to would be a great way to raise money for library materials. 

Young Adult Librarian Nichole Gardner and Head of Children's and Young Adult Services Helen Cowan Margiotti worked together with Erica and her mom on planning the 5K.  Members of our Teen Club went out into the community and handed out fliers and registration forms to local businesses looking for donations in January and again in April. 

We set up a 5K Gmail account and sent mass emails out to participants of other 5K's asking if they would be interested in participating in ours.  And, of course, we posted the event frequently on the library's Facebook page.  We had about 77 total participants (this includes the 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk) and about 25 volunteers who helped on the race day.  Based on the success of the event--we cleared more than $1,600 to add to our library materials budget--the 5K is likely to become an annual event, but that decision has yet to be made official.
