How important is water quality to our marine and freshwater ecosystems? Important enough that we dedicate a month to celebrate it! 

August is National Water Quality Month. Our national marine sanctuaries depend on clean water to ensure that biological diversity, coastal scenery, and recreational and commercial opportunities thrive. During “Snapshot Day” in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, hundreds of citizen science volunteers aid in water quality efforts, assessing rivers, streams, and other coastal California watersheds.

Words alone fail to capture my delight over this user needs survey. Imagine me doing a happy dance about it. Here's why:

It's a user-needs survey. I really like them, because they are about what library users actually need, not what library staff assumes they need.

The user-needs survey is about where students most need & want librarians to help them outside of thelibrary.

The user-needs survey includes an image macro that, by referencingThe Fellowship of the Ring, humorously tweaks the difficulty of research: "One does not simply FIND a full-text article.

It's just...really, really awesome. Brava, Robeson Library peeps! Everyone, follow them. Seriously.

The Robeson Library folks were READY for Snapshot Day -- and invited members of the Rutgers University-Camden community to participate via social media. Reference Librarian Katie Anderson even told me that the library launched its Instagram account especially for Snapshot Day!

Rancocas Valley Regional High School's LMC depends on a corps of student volunteers. In their break room, Dee Venuto celebrates their contributions with photos, provides cubby space for their belongings, and makes clear what their weekly assignments are.

Andy's & my final stop of the day is a combined stop in Camden, NJ, home of the Paul Robeson Library at Rutgers University-Camden and the Nilsa I. Cruz-Perez Downtown Branch of the Camden County Library System.

When Children's Senior Library Assistant Juni created the library’s FB page, it was to work in tandem with the library’s blog and the Teen FB page, created by YA Librarian Nichole Gardner. Juni had never intended to Admin the page to the extent he does now. His intention was to add children’s events and give patrons just one more way to interact with their library. Then Juni thought that it would be nice to post pictures from some of our library programs. After that, he thought it would be nice to suggest some books to the few fans of the library’s page with Book of the Day suggestions. Then the library’s page hit 150 LIKES…and Juni went crazy. Turns out he wanted EVERYONE to love his library as much as he did. Because libraries are awesome (FACT).
