Using NLP Techniques in Different Areas of Life
The following are the most powerful NLP techniques that help people change their behavior, obtain better results and experience more positive changes in life. Techniques 1 and 2 are used as a means of disassociation from a negative emotion or feeling while techniques 3, 4 and 5 prove to be helpful in detaching oneself from negative emotion or feeling even further.
Technique#1: Dissociation
Sometimes people tend to react to situations in a negative way which leads to depression, stress or negative feelings. For instance, one might angry when they hear a particular word. Dissociation helps to neutralize negative upheavals triggered by such trivial issues.
To achieve the dissociation effect:
Identify the negative emotion you want to overcome.
Picture yourself encountering the situation from start to finish.
Play the mental movie backwards, fast-forward, and backwards again.
Repeat it backwards3-4 times, adding a funny music.
Now try to picture the same event like it is happening to you now. The negative emotions towards the trigger should have altered or subdued. If you still experience some negativity, keep repeating this chain of thoughts until the negative emotion is completely eliminated.
Technique#2: Content Reframe
This NLP technique is effective in a circumstance which makes you feel helpless, angry or when a negative event occurs. It transforms the implication of the situation to more positive way. For instance, being laid off is a bad thing, but if you try to see positive aspects of the situation like you can now apply for better positions or develop better skills, you have re-framed the content of the negative situation from bad to good. Content reframe helps you focus on the good instead of the bad.
Anchoring is mainly used in NLP to obtain an emotional response to an act. For instance, it is possible for someone to start instinctively smiling when you tap their shoulder. This technique is useful to instantly change how a person feels.
Identify the feeling you want someone to experience, like happiness.
Do something to make the person experience that.
When you feel that the person is about to reach the peak of his/her intense emotion (happiness in this case), tap their shoulder just BEFORE the peak and remember exactly where you touched.
Take your hand off and say something unrelated.
After some time, tap exactly the same spot and observe the response.
Rapport is an easy skill that helps you get along with any type of person. This can be done in many ways like:
Follow the breathing patterns of a person.
Mirror their body language
Observe their main sensory perception and use the similar perception yourself.
Technique#5: Belief Change
Dwelling for too long on a bad experience attracts similar experiences that reinforce your perception about the situation. This technique aims at eliminating restrictive, negative beliefs and gathers more positive aspects about a situation than the current pessimistic beliefs you might have based on past experience.
NLP has a series of advanced techniques, particularly at Master Practitioner level to really transform limiting beliefs such as being unable to lose the last 10 pounds of weight, not being able to make it through school, or never finding the man of your dreams.
