“Also! Also did I tell you that Eddie brought in homemade tamales for us yesterday? He said his grandmother made them. But I bet he’s trying to suck up to Cap because he likes to cook, and he mentioned that he loves Mexican food. But you know, Maddie— you know that I bet he doesn’t even have a grandmother. I bet he just bought them from someone on the side of the road. He’s just— Ehh! You don’t even understand how awful he is. I hate him,” Buck rants.
Maddie takes a bite of her Eggs Benedict and frowns. “You did tell me that. You also said that the tamales were good. You also have told me a story about Eddie Diaz every day since you started at the firehouse. Are there other people who work there?”
Buck waves her off.
Initially meeting at the Fire Academy, Eddie and Buck start off as rivals. Slowly, their relationship develops into more.
“So, Buck, what made you want to be a firefighter?” Chimney turns to him. Popping a loud bubble like it’s meant to be a question mark.
Buck smiles, “Figured it would be cool.”
Hen and Chimney share a secretive grin and Buck suddenly feels like he said the wrong thing.
“And Eddie?” Chimney asks. “What about you?”
“The comradery. I’ve missed that since leaving the army.”
“Silver Star, right?” Hen asks.
Buck can’t help himself; he rolls his eyes and purses his lips together. It’s all Eddie and his Silver Star. How he saved a bunch of his team from a helicopter crash. How they got shot down. The first few times it was fascinating to hear. But if Eddie launches into the tale once more (Buck ignores the fact that he’s actually never heard Eddie tell the story. Just confirmed that he does indeed have a Silver Star), Buck might have to butt in and finish it for him because he’s heard it so many times (from other people, never from Eddie).
Eddie and his Silver Star.
Buck looks out the window and bites the inside of his cheek, gearing up to hear the story for the millionth time.
“Yeah,” Eddie confirms slowly.
“That’s really impressive. What did you do, save a school or something?”
Right on cue.
“No, no, nothing like that.”
“Well, what happened?”
“Alright, we’re here. Everyone out,” Captain Nash instructs as they pull up to a suburban neighborhood where a girl no more than fifteen is on the front lawn crying.
“Can you tell us what’s going on?” Captain Nash asks when they get out of the truck.
She hiccups and nods, “I’m – I’m sorry. I turned away for a minute and she – she ran away.”
“Who ran away?”
“S-Sprinkles ran up the tree.”
“It’s okay. We can help,” Bobby says calmly. He gestures for Buck and Eddie to join them. “Can you tell us what tree it is?”
Buck knows he’s supposed to be professional. He knows every call is important and should be treated with the utmost respect. But this is his first call out with his brand-new station and they’re called to get a cat out of a tree. He didn’t even know fire departments still do that. He figures that would be a waste of resources or something. But as much as he wants to roll his eyes because he expected something a little more intense, he listens as the teenager explains that the cat ran up the tree right over there (she points way above their heads) and can’t get down.
“Alright, Buck, Eddie, you’re going to spot one another and use the ladder to get up there,” Captain Nash instructs.
“Are you sure we need two people to go up there? I can do it myself,” Buck says.
Captain Nash looks at him with a raised eyebrow. “Are you questioning my authority on this call, Buckley?”
“No, no, I’m just saying it’s a cat in a tree. Do we really need two people to go up there? I can do it myself while Diaz stays down here. Maybe comforting the girl?”
Captain Nash stares at him. Eddie’s eyes have narrowed and he’s almost glaring.
“Both of you are going up there. And don’t question my authority again Buckley. One of you will spot the other. It’s a great height and if one of you falls, you’ll have the other’s back.”
“I wasn’t— I didn’t mean to question—”
“Just get in the tree.”
Captain Nash leaves to go talk to the teenager with Hen and try to get her to calm down. Buck glances over at Eddie who is watching him with a completely blank expression. Eddie is probably internally laughing at him being told off by the Captain. Eddie is probably so gleeful that Buck has already messed up. Eddie is probably–
“I can take the lead,” Buck says begrudgingly. “I mean I’ll go get the cat. You can spot me or whatever.”
“I can spot you? Or whatever?” Eddie repeats with an edge to his voice. “I can stay down here and comfort the girl? What the fuck?”
“Yeah! I was trying to be strategic,” Buck says, and he really tries hard not to sound so snide about it, but it’s hard to do when Eddie is giving him such a huffy look.
“Whatever,” Eddie says, putting his hands up in surrender. “Let’s go.”
Chimney moves the truck closer to the tree where they can see a fluff of black all the way up on one of the highest branches. Eddie secures the harness on both of them as a precaution in case they fall. He checks the ropes twice before he lets Buck start to walk up the ladder.
“You shouldn’t argue with the Captain,” Eddie says as they walk up the ladder. Eddie’s behind him, so Buck makes a face at Eddie telling him what to do.
“I wasn’t arguing with the Captain.”
“You wanted to go up here and be a hero by yourself.”
“Jealous, Diaz?”
“More like alarmed you don’t know what a team actually is, Buck.”
“I know what a team is.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” Eddie mutters.
Buck nearly trips twisting around to glare at him. “I was just saying that I can do this alone. It’s not a two man job.”
“You need someone to watch your back.”
“Because I can’t do it alone?”
“No! Because if you fall, you’ll injure yourself. Don’t you care about that?”
Buck turns back around and doesn’t say anything. He continues climbing up the ladder. They’re nearly there.
“Is this some alpha bullshit? You have to show how strong you are?” Eddie pushes.
“Can we just focus on getting the cat?” Buck says tightly. It’s not some alpha bullshit. But he’s not going to tell Eddie that. Eddie seems intent on thinking the absolute worst of Buck. Which, fine, whatever. He’s not going to try to correct him. What good would it do anyway?
Buck takes a misstep on the ladder and Eddie’s hand immediately goes to his arm to stop him from falling. Even though the harness and the rope safely secure him. He blinks in surprise and rights himself. It’s only when he’s steady on his feet again does he look back at Eddie who’s patiently waiting for him to go on. He doesn’t say anything, just waits until Buck is ready to start moving again. Buck takes a deep breath and continues up the ladder until he’s at the very top. The kitten sits there staring blankly at them as if she’s confused as to how she got here. Tentatively, Buck reaches out to take Sprinkles, but the cat backs up away from his hand.
“Do you see the cat?” Eddie asks loudly.
“Shhh, don’t scare her,” Buck says, flapping his hand behind him to get Eddie to be quiet. He reaches forward again and as gently as he can, picks her up by the scruff of her neck. She meows and stares at him blankly.
“Got her,” Buck says and turns around to glance over his shoulder at Eddie.
Eddie smiles in relief and something in Buck’s chest tightens. Buck pushes it away before he can look too deeply at it.
Once they are back on the ground, Buck hands the kitten over to the teenager who starts crying again and hugging Sprinkles so tightly Buck is afraid they’ll have to do another rescue.
“Thank you so much,” she says between sobs.
“No problem,” Buck says and turns back to the rest of the 118 fully expecting to be told ‘good job’ for getting the cat back to the owner, instead they are congratulating Eddie. He’s smiling in that same amicable manner he had this morning while Buck watched from the glass of the locker room. Buck rolls his eyes and heads back toward the truck.
