To have my place back to myself again. My friend has outstayed his welcome at this point. It would be one thing if he actually started looking for a place when he first moved in, but I had to raise the issue with him when it was mid-October and he hadn’t told me about seeing any places nor had I seen him leave the house. He seemed more than happy to set up shop on the living room futon though and do academic work when not watching the news (which he has on 24/7). Like wtf, housing is hard enough in this city and if you have an eviction on your record, which he does, it is extra hard, which means you have to apply to a lot of independent landlords until one agrees to rent to you. I think he’s only applied to 4-6 independent places and I’m not sure that he will have a place by November 1st at this rate. Before he moved in he implied that he was going to look for a place for October 1st. Obviously that did not happen. His dog has chewed my living room rug and dug up my neighbor’s bulbs in the backyard and my friend seems obliviously to it all. He constantly talks about academia (I had to tell him to please ask before talking about work stuff since I try to have good boundaries around work, but I honestly don’t think he is capable of talking about anything else) and he has brought up my horrible former adviser multiple times despite knowing that she treated me horribly (and I don’t think it would be that much of a leap to think to check in with me before talking about her). It has happened enough that the next time he brings her up I will tell him directly that I don’t want to hear, think, or talk about her. Honestly he is a bit triggering. I could handle it for about a month but I know I have hit my limit now. I hope he has a place to move into on the 1st but otherwise I am reminding myself that I am not responsible for the fact that he neglected his housing search. November will be a hard month for me and I’ll need my place to myself. He spends money exorbitantly, so it appears that he will be able to afford a hotel if he doesn’t have a house lined up by the 1st. I am glad that I offered my place to him and now I know that my limits are one month for a friend on my futon and one week of giving up my bed and sleeping on an air mattress in the loud and bright front room. It’s the small things that I look forward to- toilet seat lid down, curtains in the living room and kitchen open so there is light in the otherwise very dark rooms, my bed, not being woken up by traffic at 5:30 am, and QUIET/not hearing the news 24/7 and having to use a white noise machine constantly.
