I've had the discussion about on my mind for a while and it's made me start to believe that the Canaries, like many real world criminals, were involved in crimes but were given unfair punishment because the involvement is never specified and that's on purpose. Lycion and Cithis have life sentences, but Lycion's time in the fighting pit was done in a dungeon and dungeons closely monitored by Canaries. It's possible he was scooped up by someone who noticed his potential as a Canary after Utaya thinned the ranks so much.

Cithis may have murdered in self defense, which is still murder, but it shouldn't give her a life sentence. But if they noticed her magic specialty, the Dungeon Investigation Unit leadership may have decided she's useful and drummed up her charges to pull her in.

Fleki? Having drugs is legal for spell casters, especially familiar uses. But Fleki was arrested for position of ancieny artifacts. What for? She's shown no interest in ancient artifacts. Did she have it by accident. Did someone plant it on her because they noticed her capability with a familiar was better than others?

With Otta, it's entirely possible her human trafficking charge was because she was trafficked, not because she DID trafficking. This happens in real life. Equally, she may have been charged with human trafficking for helping people who the Elf Queen and their government wasn't fond of get out of the country.

I'm not going to say their hands are clean of any sin, but given how the long-lived races also have a lot of practices that convey real life imperialist governments, it's easy to see where there's room for interpretation.

In real life modern California in the U.S., incarcerated people are forcefully volunteered to fight wildfires on the ground at the risk of their lives because there's not enough firefighters as is to cover what's necessary. It's possible the Canaries are are in a similar situation.

* Go to your library and find the postcard writing station to keep Inter Library Loans & that funding available.

- this was funded by the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS, which was Doge'd right after POTUS fired LOC's head of staff) and per announcement from Minnesota Services, South Dakotas ILL services have already shut down due to lack of funding.

The library might even be sending the postcards out for you, but tell your representatives where to stick their budget cutting habits , and how important libraries & museums are to you.

* call your reps & mail them about how you believe in the No Kings protest and why

* do what you can to help the protestors - spread peaceful protest videos on the internet, and don't spread false or ai videos. Confirm your sources and Post your Sources on the social media's.

* if someone seems to need help near your house, check on them and assist if it is safe for you to do so.

* don't call the police on anyone unless your life is being actively threatened (which should be the default level)

* if someone is being threatened by police in front of you, observe safely until it is apparent someone is in need of immediate assistance.

Definitely call 911 on the police acting out of line, they might get called off or get called by a superior officer & be forced to de-escalate themselves & situation.

* know where you are, lead any 911 calls with your location and your name and what kind of help you need.

* show solidarity with protestors. If anyone calls them names or implies they're rioters, tell that person you no longer wish to have this line of conversation with them; you believe in the Constitutional Rights of all Americans for 1st amendment and due process.

Sanction bad behavior through social exclusion where needed, and advise what they can do to get in your good graces.

* buy stamps and postcards from local offices/shops and be ready to send "RESIGN NOW" cards to the White House

* encourage anyone who complains about Trump and ask them when the last time they had a break from the news turmoil was

* send letters into your local news stations/editors about their coverage and point out their biases.

*send Trump a "You Stink" birthday card.

first of all thank you so much for answering my ask! in all honesty i've never interacted much with the fandom because it's - as you said - mostly a white space and i've never felt comfortable enough sharing my opinions as a woc—especially on twitter. oh twitter .. when i tried to articulate my thoughts on why i didn't like lenore dove's casting choice everyone jumped me in the quotes (some of them even called me a racist even though i'm black). but how can i be happy for whitney when her character is a mere concept that exists only as a reason for haymitch to join the rebellion? haymitch, the boy white as bread? (but how quick some white fans rejected her when whitney was casted!). and panache .. his and magno's casting deeply disgusts me. this whole cast is whitewashed and the only characters that are there to make you feel a sense of repulsion are blacks (and dark skinned). i can say that i'm only happy about louella because watching ampert dying as a black child will be enough for me .. i don't know, white haymitch ruins everyone else for me. it makes things different, if you know what i mean

honestly, i get you! all of those reasons are exactly why i've been keeping to myself & why i can't see myself in any format of the future, watching or supporting the movie in any way. the chosen "black characters" this time around fulfil the purpose of dying for a "white" protagonist who originally isn't even white, and rendering their positions null & void minus being stepping stones for said protag.

and you know, i was well aware that they'd fuck around with casting black people as certain characters like magnus or panache. i already know what they think of us due to the cotton-picking in catching fire. says a lot with little words. the casting overall screams white supremacy & open racism and i truly have no care for it outside of how it affects other people of colour.
