Fireflies

Based On : “Imagine watching fireflies with Fili while Kili tries to catch them' pretty please?” Words: 1,182 Characters: Fili x Reader Notes: FLUFF

“…y/n…” A hand rested on your shoulder gently at first, giving you a small shake. “Y/N…” A low, young voice sung in your ear, attempting to wake you up. You groaned, lazily pulling an arm over your face to shield you from the noise. Fili and Kili looked at each other in defeat, before they both shook you. “Miss Y/N!” Your eyes flew open and you sat abruptly upright, your hair a tangled mess as you looked around for danger. The two dwarves giggled at the sight and your guard dropped as you saw it was just Fili and Kili. “Is there a reason that you guys woke me up? It’s not even daylight yet!” You groaned, hanging your head in exhaustion. The previous day had been a long one- constantly trudging through heavy terrains as The Company steadily made their way towards The Lonely Mountain. You hadn’t quite gotten your head around the idea as to why Bilbo had brought you along, but you guessed it was for the sake of the company of another hobbit. 

About a month ago, Mr.Baggins had pleaded for you to join him on the quest. At first, your nerves had jumped out of your skin and you didn’t hesitate. 

But now, you longed for your hobbit-hole once more, missing the warm smells of cinnamon and comfy sleeping quarters. Every night since, you had to sleep in a bedroll with clumps of dirt, sticks and stones poking at your back as you would roll over to get comfortable. Of course, you had quite gotten used to it by now, but nevertheless hoped to be back home soon. 

Over the last few weeks, you had grown a strong relationship with Fili and Kili- the two nephews of Thorin Oakenshield. The brooding king didn’t quite seem to appreciate your presence and to be quite honest with yourself, you don’t exactly love his company either. Thank goodness for his nephews, or else you’d be sulking behind the group with Bilbo for the rest of the trip. Kili was great fun- the youngest but definitely charming. His practical jokes and pranks on the dwarves constantly kept a wide grin on your face and you personally found it quite amusing- to the surprise of Bilbo. Fili, on the other hand, had especially caught your eye. You couldn’t quite put your finger on it- whether it was his good looks or his charming personality, he held a soft spot in your heart. He often caught you staring at him from a far, or blushing like mad whenever he’d slink an arm around your shoulders. You thought that you hid your feelings quite well, but Kili could see right through your disguise. “Fee and I found something!” Kili whispered, his wide grin reaching his excited eyes. You turned to face Fili, who shrugged with a small smile. “Can’t this wait until the morning?” You whined, furrowing your eyebrows and pouting your lips as you pleaded. “No, no- you must see it now!” The younger dwarf smirked as his brother offered a hand to help you up. You groaned in defeat and gladly grabbed his hand, holding onto it tightly as you got to your feet. You dusted yourself off, grabbing your coat as the brisk wind brushed your hair away from your face. “Alright. Where to?” You cocked your head to the side, looking up at Fili expectantly. “Close your eyes” He instructed calmly, placing a warm hand on your shoulder. You shivered at his touch, blood rushing to your cheeks as you closed your eyes. ~ “Woah.. this is… incredible” You gasped, eyes wide at the scene in front of you. While you thought that they were leading you into some rotten old troll cave, when you finally opened your eyes after about a half-hour of tripping over branches and stepping around boulders, you were happily surprised. It was a clearing, about the size of the food market back in The Shire. Surrounding the clearing was the forest, tall pine trees that jutted out towards the sky, their needles shaken to create a bed of green below. Tall grass that went up to your thighs heavily decorated the space in front of you, with dandelions and buttercups sprouting in patches. However, that’s not what made your jaw drop. Fireflies buzzed by, tens- no, hundreds of them dotted the dark sky with their golden glow. It illuminated the area to create a sort of heavenly feeling to it, the soft sound of the wind brushing through the trees making you sway as if it were music. “A pretty impressive find, if I do say so myself” Fili gloated, placing his hands on his hips as he nodded to himself. “Oh, shut up! I saw it before you” Kili challenged his brother before walking out into the tall grass. You grinned widely at the two- amusement filling your eyes as you watched them bicker. They always loved to tease each other. “Hey, y/n, wanna bet that I can catch some?” Kili bounced on his heels, rubbing his palms together as he prepared to jump. “Pff, I bet you couldn’t catch one” You teased, walking after the brown-haired prince. He stuck his tongue out at you playfully, before leaping after the insects, falling over as he would miss. You laughed loudly, clutching at your stomach as you sat down in the tall green, breathing in the fresh musk of the dirt below you. Fili chuckled deeply at the sight of his brother desperately trying to catch one, watching as the flies would hum by without an effort, avoiding Kili’s grasp. You relaxed once the oldest nephew joined you, lying down on your back with your hair splayed above your head, trying to suppress a smile as the grass tickled your toes gently. These were the moments that you had longed for back home, really feeling the wild as it engulfed you in it’s majesty. Fili gazed down at you longingly for goodness knows how long until you finally noticed, words caught in your throat as you gazed back at him. He shook his head to himself before lying down next to you, his shoulder pressing against yours, and gazed as the fireflies fluttered above the two of you. Distant “oomphs” and “ahh”s could be heard as the determined Kili tried to catch one. You turned to your side, feeling exhaustion wash over you like a wave and blinked up to look at Fili, who was dozing off himself, his chest rising and falling steadily. Unlike the other dwarves, the prince was a generally quiet sleeper, hardly making a sound as he slept. You smiled bashfully, before shuffling closer so that you could rest your head on his shoulder. He flinched in his sleep as you did this, and you suddenly regretted moving, hoping not to wake him. Instead of asking you to move like you thought he would, he simply wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you closer towards your chest. . . . “Aha! Caught one, y/n!”
