Confederate is a Bad Idea #3
A story about escaped black women who form a badass gang. They use their various skills to expertly track down the children that were violently ripped away from them at auctions. As they save their children or exact their revenge, their partners (men and women who are free in the West) wait for them on a massive ranch set up by a mysterious benefactor. It can be anachronistic and bloody a la Tarantino, without the gratuitous use of the n word and Samuel L Jackson.
It's like the point of #NoConfederate went right over HBO's head. Which of course it did. The entire fucking point is, I am speaking for myself as a black woman, I don't want no fucking TV show where the south won the civil war and my people are still slaves in modern times. HBO keeps saying the stupidest shit. The producers explained that their narrative isn’t a defense of slavery or an endorsement of white supremacist ideas. “This is not a world in which the entire country is enslaved,” he said. “Slavery is in one half of the country. And the North is the North… The imagery should be no whips and no plantations.” So the fuck what!!! The point is there is still slavery. Do they think we don't what slavery entailed or how awful black people were treated. Treated worst than animals, raped and murdered. Torn from their families. There is nothing. Nothing HBO can say that will make me want to watch a fucking show where the south won. I am disgusted with HBO's attempts to convince people oh it's not as bad you think it's gonna be. The only thing I hear is, "Slavery wasn't that bad, saying the south won in this AU shouldn't hurt your feelings and cause this deeply painful ache in your soul and it's not gonna be as bad as you think." "How?!" "Oh just reserve judgment. An AU where black people are still slaves in the South...just wait and see...we're not trying to glorify white supremacy." "What are you trying to do?" "....Just wait and see, dude." Like fuck HBO. Fuck you. 400 years of dehumanizing treatment of entire race by white people and then that whole Jim Crow bullshit. I mean I don't think I would have lived long in a world like that. I don't think people really think about the strength black people had to have to survive all that shit. No, they wanna make a fucking TV show where the south fucking won and tell me with a straight fucking face, on a network where their biggest show has no problem portraying slavery and rape, that it's not gonna be what I fucking think it's gonna be. Fuck you. Seriously. I am so pissed. Confederate will absolutely glorify white supremacy. Trust and believe...they can say all this shit but they literally have no message they want to send with this show. A lot of people will say it's just an AU. It's not a big deal. Don't censor blah blah blah. Black people don't owe anyone shit and we don't have to accept shit like this. This disrespectful. We suffered and continue to deal with awful treatment everyday. The affects of Slavery and Jim Crow still haunt us everyday, maybe not overtly but it's still there. I am disgusted.
Because I’m genuinely curious about/puzzled by this.
Why is it now (apparently) generally accepted that stories about “black pain” and/or slavery-related stories are harmful, problematic, and should stop, when...
A) I can’t imagine the Jewish community today objecting to works depicting the horrors of the Holocaust, Nazism, antisemitism in the modern day, etc., despite their trauma being (in a significant way) much fresher?
B) quite recently, 12 Years a Slave and Django Unchained (directed by a black man and a white man, respectively), and the Roots remake, received, as far as I’m aware, widespread praise?
Also, the same exact anti SJWs complaining about #NoConfederate are protesting against Deadpool 2 for Domino being black......
