Sculpture Elective [S&CM]

After our class with Michael on building positive routines this morning, he challenged us to make the tallest sculpture we could with materials we had to hand.  I chose tinfoil and got so frustrated that I actually left the class. After a cup of tea, I looked back over my notes and noticed one of the rules - try and bring your work to a conclusion.

I sat back down with my sculpture, this time using boxes to support the tinfoil coil. I found I began to really enjoy the balancing act of trying to get the tinfoil to stand freely. The shapes I had to manipulate the foil into in a counter-balance reminded me of Franz West -  Paßstück and the circle chevron box gives me weird circus vibes.

I think it’s important to remind myself that I am not creating for a finished product at the moment, I am just creating to experiment. A fun challenge, just a bad day. But as Michael says, there are no days wasted in the studio!

The move into a new house has kept me extra busy and luckily it's also taper time before the hundred miler. So, it's been difficult to make sure I'm still getting enough training that doesn't involve house work or lifting stuff. What motivates you for days when you have a long run? For me, its a new found goal to explore new places and routes as the snow continues to thaw throughout the year. This weekend we checked our Canyon of the Ancients, which is a national monument extending across 176,000 acres in Montezuma County with the highest known density of archaeological sites in the US. You can easily let your mind drift thanks to the breathtaking landscape and marvelous ruins but the rugged terrain makes you vigilant to the fragile cryptobiotic soil, cacti and sharp turns with quick drops. Coming into Toughest South I felt confident in my ability to execute. The goal was simple coast in the top five and ramp the pace up after the fourth lap and snag a spot on the podium. The obstacles weren't a challenge thanks to all the work we put in over the last few months and my conditioning was on point. Unfortunately, once I tried to open up and push the pace I realized there was something wrong. Nagging soreness at my fibula that I've been nursing bubbled to pain, pain became throbbing which turned into an excruciating burn that immobilized me. I've never felt so strong yet helpless. At 6AM I realized that my plan had to be scrapped since I couldn't push off my right foot. Yet, the idea of just sitting it out and waiting for everyone to finish didn't sit right with me. I came to race, not mope. So, I decided to go for a long cold walk/limp to help and encourage others where I could and meet some great people a long the way. Even though I'm limping my way around today I don't feel like a failure . I got to spend a weekend with some amazing people, meet some new friends, play outside for 8 hours, and celebrate the accomplishments of some friends and great people. Time to get this checked out by a doc and come better and stronger.
