Full-color drawings of all my Insektors characters, other than Kachhua since I already drew several of her. They are, in order: Iridamorous, Makabris, Nokturno, Okagne, and Kurkulie. Iridamorous is a Verigreen, all the others are Kruds. You may recognize Makabris, Kurkulie, and Okagne from sketches I’ve posted on this blog previously! 

Iridamorous, or Irid for short, is a bagworm moth. He has quite a knack for building things, and is good friends with Kachhua. He’s also a spy, so they do spend lots of time together outside of the Flowered City. He is a frequent victim of mistaken identity, by the Kruds he often eavesdrops on. They never suspect a thing...

Makabris is a stink bug. He is the Kruds’ blacksmith, and he supplies Synapse with metal as well as helping him construct his machines. Makabris tries to maintain a good relationship with all the Kruds, though it can be difficult sometimes due to his... scent. He has something of a brotherly bond with Krabouic and Kaboche.

Nokturno is a mayfly. She is basically comatose 11 out of 12 months of every year, awakening only for May. Feeling like she’d be a burden to the Kruds otherwise, she assigned herself the job of inspector, tasked with writing down anything dangerous or suspicious she finds within the city during her only month awake. Kurkulie is in charge of monitoring her for the rest of the year, after the end of May. It’s a rather time-consuming job, but at least it’s been easy. Nokturno is quite fond of Kretinus, since he’s always the one to walk her around the city & tell her what she’s missed each year.

Okagne is a jumping spider. She is a weaver, and she specializes in blankets... mostly because her fellow Kruds don’t really tend to wear clothes that aren’t metal armor or merely part of their exoskeleton. She’s the second youngest (named) Krud in the city, other than Max of course, and is very energetic and a bit naïve. As a spider, of course her primary medium is silk... though, she is known to use more coarse material out of spite if someone makes her mad (like Krabo LOL).

Kurkulie is a filbert weevil. She is the Kruds’ doctor, a position she shares with Synapse if things get dire. She’s a very kind and caring person, but isn’t as knowledgeable on medicine as she ought to be. If she isn’t confined to her office with Nokturno, she can often be found in the library looking through medical books for assistance. She is farsighted, and needs glasses to read and work... which she rests on her antennae. Perfect spot for them, correct angle and everything! She is Kretinus’ mother, and they are very close. She loves her son dearly, no matter how many mistakes he makes.

whew, that was a lot more text than I thought I was gonna write LOL. Hope you like them though! I had fun designing all of them!

Nokturno (2024)

I’ve been thinking a lot about John Carpenter these last few weeks – mostly because of Halloween but also because I’ve run out of space on my movie shelves and need to do some trimming. I have a very nice edition of 1980’s The Fog that will have to go because every time I sit down to watch it, I think “Maybe THIS time, I’ll fall in love with the movie” and I never do. It’s such a straightforward telling of its ghost story that at feature length, it feels excessive. I’ve seen everything it does within a half-hour somewhere else. I wonder if I would feel the same about Nokturno had I been familiar with the Filipino folklore that inspired it before hitting "Play". Because I had never heard of the Kumakatok before, I didn’t know what to expect. The ending is particularly good in a “you rarely see movies do this” kind of way.

Kumakatok are ghost-like, hooded figures that knock on doors in the middle of the night. Opening to them invites a fatal curse into your home. Jamie (Nadine Lustre) never took her mother’s stories of the Kumakatok seriously. When her sister dies and the police declare it a suicide, Jamie believes the family superstitions finally pushed her over the edge, while her mother (Eula Valdez) insists the evil spirits are to blame.

When Nokturno begins, you think you can see where it’s going. Joanna (Bea Binene) confesses to Manu (Wilbert Ross) that she heard knocking on her front door three nights ago, that she opened it and that since, she’s been haunted by frightening visions that tell her tonight she’s going to die. Once Jamie begins entertaining the idea that something supernatural caused her sister’s death, she begins investigating. It feels A LOT like the opening of The Ring. It is at first, but the film takes an unexpected direction during the final act. You won't see that frightening ending coming despite it feeling like what a “real” ghost story would be like. It does away with aspects of the genre that in hindsight, feel more like story conventions or building blocks to ensure audiences receive a standard, three-act structure.

Helping Nokturno is that it exploits already-scary ideas. If you hear knocking at your door after sunset, even if you're expecting visitors, you pause it. There’s a part of you that’s scared to look through that peephole. You wonder what kind of crazy person or sinister creature might be out there, in the dark, asking to be let into your home. Even in the daytime, if you hear knocking on your door and you open it, only to find no one standing there… you’ll be a little shaken. “Was I just tricked? Did I do exactly what something malevolent wanted me to do?” That’s on top of the moody lighting, the Kumakatok’s design, the idea of going mad, of seeing something so scary you’d rather die than confront it, or of being murdered by something that makes it LOOK like you killed yourself.

In hindsight, Nokturno is a "no bells or whistles" ghost story but it does what it wants to do well. You sympathize and relate with the protagonist. You understand the relationship she has with her family - it's a big theme in the film. It's got plenty of scary scenes and for many viewers, its monsters and rules will be a breath of spooky-fresh air. (Original Tagalog with English subtitles, Nov 1, 2024)

Aloitamme viikon herkällä ja romanttisella Chopinin nokturnolla No. 20. Chopin omisti tämän sävellyksen omalle sisarelleen ja se oli tarkoitettu harjoituskappaleeksi ennen säveltäjän toisen pianokonserton aloittamista. Sitä kutsutaan myös nimellä ”Reminiscence” (Muistelu). Tiesitkö muuten, että tämä kaunis melodia on pelastanut myös ihmishengen? Kerrotaan, että holokaustista selvinnyt Natalia Karp soitti tämän kappaleen keskitysleirin komentajalle ja tämä oli niin vaikuttunut, että päätti olla surmamatta häntä.
