Have you watched Nolly yet? Streaming now on ITVX, the series follows Noele Gordon – star of the real 1964–1988 soap, Crossroads – and the a
In early 2023 Antonia did an interview with Country & Town House coinciding with the release of Nolly on streaming services. While the discussion is primarily focused on her role in Nolly, she also talks about returning to acting after taking a break to focus on her young children, balancing motherhood and work, and answers miscellaneous questions about her personal life.
Get you a man who can do both
I was introduced to Russell T Davies' work through DOCTOR WHO. In 2005, he revived the show and created an entire generation of obsessed sci-fi British nerds - including me. Hell, I now run a podcast dedicated to the show.
As I got older, I went through his previous work and discovered a wealth of great television and storytelling. He started his career on DARK SEASON, CENTURY FALLS and QUEER AS FOLK (TV shows which, I must admit, I have not seen). Then, he produced his early masterpiece: THE SECOND COMING. If you haven't seen it, it stars a pre-Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston in the role of Jesus Christ. Yes, really. It's one of the most interesting takes on religion I've ever seen and it still holds up.
And, then, a pre-Tenth Doctor David Tennant took on the role of CASANOVA, which would eventually lead him to even greater roles. Then, DOCTOR WHO. Then, TORCHWOOD and THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES and, my personal favourite, CUCUMBER; what must it be like for older gay people, who grew up in a time of such intolerance, watching a world around them becoming increasingly gay-friendly? An utterly slept-on masterpiece; perhaps his greatest work.
Then, A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL and YEARS AND YEARS and IT'S A SIN and NOLLY (the latter of which I had the privilege of seeing the premiere at the BFI Southbank) and… DOCTOR WHO again? This time with Mr Ncuti Gatwa. An illustrious career, edited down to a single minute. I hope you enjoy this montage/tribute/trailer, whatever you want to call it.
