second attempt at a fake watercolour of Medka and Actalus, and we're getting somewhere.
Also I wanted to give them hats, because almost all the figurines on the wikipedia article for the Xianbei have cool little soft hats.

The relayhouse’s keeper tried to deny Medka entry at first, insisting the establishment only welcomed citizens. It took some effort to get him to look at Propraetor Vitilius’s letter. Instantly, the man’s attitude changed, and he couldn’t be deferential enough as he offered Medka the best his relayhouse had to offer, while also sending a slave to look after his horses. He even offered to trade those for fresh ones, which Medka politely refused. First, because he’d been warned relayhouse horses were to be used by men under princely orders and he could get in great trouble for breaking that rule. Second, because those were his horses, which he’d help raise from birth. They were sturdy animals he knew and trusted, his only companions on his journey to Camundis, now that the generals were gone. The keeper accepted his answer without trouble, and left to give orders to his staff. Medka knew by then that it would take some time for a bed to be prepared, so he went to sit at one of the tables in the main room of the relayhouse. He didn’t have problems finding a chair near the chimney, where a weak fire did little to dry his drenched clothes. There were no other guests at the relayhouse, which came at no surprise considering the storm outside. It had looked cloudy that morning when Medka had left the previous relayhouse on that road, but he hadn’t expected it would take such a turn. Back home he would never have been caught by surprise that way. The weather was so different here, and none of the wisdom he’d managed to glean in spite of his step-mother was any use. He would have to learn.
hmm k I'm doing that. Gonna try to share bits of that novel here and there, for shits and giggles.
Nomad AU of Goro, Lương and Vân
In a world where they start off as clanmates, or perharps an alternate future where they all run off together to become nomads, like Vân always wanted.
Lương looks even more inconspicuous in this AU because he doesn't have to hide his wickedness to blend in the corpo world!
I think Goro would looks pretty much the same, plus some tattoos and ... more buckles and straps!
pretty nomad bois

The conceit of the barbarian AU is that kidnapping mates is perfectly normal and even expected among the tribal mechs, yet I’ve never seen a fic exploring how that works for them. There’s a couple mentions of mechs from the same tribe who already know each doing the kidnapping as like a marriage ritual.
What about the pressures of growing up in a culture where you could be legally kidnapped and forced to shack up with a stranger at any time? How old does a mech have to be before they can be taken, and what happens if someone underaged is taken by accident? Are there standardized ‘rules of engagement’ across some or most of the tribes? Maybe in one tribe it’s a crime to drug, restrain, or coerce a mate into interface, while in another it’s expected that the kidnapper sparkbond/impregnate a mate as soon as possible in order to tie them to their new family unit.
Is kidnapping a bonded mech or one with sparklings allowed? If no, how would you know that information pre-kidnapping and what happens if you do it by accident? Is it okay to kill the mate of a bonded mech and then take them, or would that bring dishonor on your house and your cybercow? If taking a mech with sparklings is allowed, is the kidnapper expected to adopt the sparklings or to leave them with their other parent? What if you kidnap a pregnant mech by accident?
What if you try to kidnap someone and they beat your ass? Is the cultural expectation for you to leave them alone or try harder next time?
I have questions.
My babies nomad Hanako and Vincent just being cute by @dewakinnara ❤️❤️❤️ Yesterday was blessed, today is also blessed, I'm scared what tomorrow will bring!
