I'm 4 days late and I'm so sorry but life has been sending me through the ringer lately. The collection is now open!

Beauty/Psycho a fan even running fron June 27th-July 11th. Open for any fandom, posting here on tumblr, on twitter or on Ao3. This is a celebration of any and all ships that have been deemed "problematic" by either other people in your fandom, or by other people and fandoms. Doesn't matter, kink, incest, dark themes.

Rules:

NO SHIP BASHING!!! This is a pro-ship event. No bashing other participants or including anything in your entries that bashes other ships or ideas.

This is a shipping based event, so make sure that that is the subject of your work.

All media is allowed except photos with human subjects as we cannot determine consent.

Tag everything with #beauty/psycho-event2024 so that the blog can see it. You can either use any of the prompts for the day or you can use anything else from the lyrics of the songs that inspired the prompts.

You do not need to follow the days right, just pick what you'd like to write and post it. The collection will remain open until next year's event.

So I got an ask about why i had a problem with a post earlier about liking ships that could be “romantic or not” because the chemistry stuff is unimportant and I actually thought I wanted this stuff actually laid out on my blog.

The original post boils down to "I like ships where you don't have to see it as romantic *because* the the sex and kissing is basically beside the point of the other things they have." which draws a direct line or conflation between the sex and the romance. They're saying that what makes a romance a romance is the physical attraction, not necessarily alone, but as the main component. And then the respondents chime in to agree and promote some the idea of some platonic-amorphous other relationship. 

And, while I know that the word Platonic originally meant something deeply romantic, it's current idiomatic use is to indicate non-sexual, non-romantic either friendship or familial based relationships. Which is what i understood those comments to indicate. 

So my point is that there are a lot of people out there who feel just a little bit superior because they maintain that they aren't into "romantic shipping" because A) they aren't -- or don't want to be seen to be -- preoccupied with that sexy stuff, not realizing that the sexuality of a relationship doesn't make up the sum-total of a romantic relationship. While I love the idea of people moving past the "chemistry" elements to the more meaty and, to me, more interesting emotional attraction, supportiveness, trust, commitment, and even codependence, the knee-jerk distancing from the word “romance” and concept of “romantic” is troubling to me on a couple of levels. It just keeps furthering this idea that romantic attraction/romantic interaction and sexual attraction/sexual interaction are exactly the same (they aren't). 

Or B) they buy into the idea that romance and love are something childish and one-noted from which an intellectual fan must distance themselves to be taken seriously. Which is a bizarre, backwards, and outright damaging idea to take on. This idea seems to have a lot to do with the way fandom at large seems to assume that it's teenage girls and only teenage girls that are interested in romance, and to be taken seriously they have to make an effort to make themselves "not like the other girls/fans" by making it clear that straightforward love and commitment are things that they disdain as cheap and juvenile. Never mind that love in a romantic sense is a huge and valuable part of the human experience. And never mind that there's not actually anything wrong with teenage girls and liking what they like is just fine. 

Or C) they're sick to death of the commodification of sex and women, which is understandable, and are moved to want some idealized other option available for their ships and for their fantasy that has more meaning. But this loops back around again to the conflation of sex and romance -- not that they don't go together for most people, but they also nearly as often don't and of course romantic love is about much more than sexual chemistry -- and this mythical better, ideal "third option" -- with trust and support, understanding and devotion not simply bogged down in base attraction -- is actually what you could find in a loving, close, romantic relationship. I just get fed up sometimes with all the people who bend over backwards to avoid admitting that what they're talking about is the same thing they're doing their damndest to avoid being associated with -- for what are often ignorant or petty reasons.

Leaving aside the fact that, despite the way it doesn’t interest me personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being interested in something for the “physical chemistry” side and I don’t think fans should be shamed for that either, the above pattern seems like a strange contortion to me.
