The Witch’s Clueless Cat

Interesting bit of trivia: I drew these characters way back at University in 2015! You can see sketches of the witch and the cat here:

At that point however, the cat was kind of a dick. He was sent to the witch as a sort of curse and would always taunt her for every failing – kind of like the voice of depression, anxiety and self-loathing. This kept going until the witch made peace with it at some point.

That cat got switched to Ozzy for this story.

I was given to my witch when I was a young kitten.

I loved being a witch’s cat! I got my bowtie, my hat, and my name: Ozzy.

Sadly, the witch’s other familiars didn’t like me very much at first. They said they don’t understand how I’m neither a girl nor a boy cat. They told me I was just “confused”. But I never felt that way until they made me confused.

I refused to change. Eventually they got used to me and we learned to get along.

I love my witch. She’s very patient with me, so I am very patient with her in return.

When she messed up a spell and made me floaty I wasn’t angry.

In fact, I loved my new ability, the world is ever so much nicer when you see it from up high! Now I was even confusing the laws of gravity.

They often tell me I’m silly or clueless, but I actually know all manner of important things.

I know not to mix newt legs with bat ears, for instance.

I know how to float quietly enough to be able to listen to the birds’ morning song without disturbing them.

And I know that the woman who now often comes to sleep over is gonna become part of our family. So surely they can’t be mad at me for wanting to play hide and seek with her! (They were mad though. But I was right! ;))

My witch never questioned who I am.

She doesn’t mind that some days I wear a dress and dance with the crow.

Neither is she bothered if some other days I wear my bowtie and play ninja fight with the horse.

My favorite thing in the world though, is being cuddled on a couch by my witch and my new not-witch human. I can write my poetry in peace while they pet me, it’s the best! Here’s what I’ve been working on, just for you and me to read <3
