Dried Paint (Sun x Reader Ficlet)

Warnings: Angst

Sun is a jerk here, it's implied you're a new employee and he's already decided he doesn't like you.

Ficlet below the cut!

“So like, what's your deal?”

Sun pauses wiping down the table. When he turns his head you pretend to engross yourself in scrubbing a Monty figure. You definitely could’ve worded your question more delicately.

“Excuse me?”

Something in his tone tells you that you're walking on the cusp of making a Very Bad Social Blunder. The Monty toy in your hands stares impassively as if to say “you're on your own.” You scrub harder at the paint stubbornly stuck to its chest. So much for tempera being washable.

“I always see the other bots walking around,” you start carefully, “The Glam Rocks I mean. The mascots?”

He’s turned to face you completely now. You don’t dare look at him, picking at the splotch on the toy with your nails. Like a tire rolling downhill, the words continue to tumble out before you can stop yourself.

“It’s like you never leave the daycare, not even when it’s closed. Even DJ leaves the Fazcade sometimes, but I’ve never seen you walking around. I guess it’s just weird to me that—”

Sun snatches the figurine from you.

“Aren’t you nosy! Didn’t your mom ever tell you it’s rude to pry,” he chides.

Tutting annoyedly, Sun presses the soaked rag he was using earlier to the paint splotch. Your hands stay frozen in front of you, slightly taken aback by his sudden behavior. He crouches slightly to meet you at eye level.

“None of them have to clean and maintain an entire daycare by themselves like I do. None of them have to do their own maintenance like I do. None of them have to deal with fixing the mistakes of a revolving door of ‘handlers’ that don’t even know how to get dried paint up from plastic like I do.”

The paint wipes off the toy with ease when he pulls the cloth away. Stunned and embarrassed, you can only awkwardly stare when he shoves the little Monty back into your hands. Turning away with a huff, he goes back to wiping down the table. His voice is much cheerier when he speaks next.

“I just don’t have time for all that,” He laughs, “I think now would be a good time to take your break, friend. You don’t want to overwork yourself!”

You stare down at the wet action figure in your hands. Your eyes sting, but you refuse to cry in front of this jerk. You take a breath to hopefully steady your voice.

“Right… Yeah, I’ll go do that.”

My friend asked about how I see Sun! This is the following rant talk.

Thinking about Moon's first dreams in Robots In Ponyville... I think they'd be nightmares. Memories. Princess Luna would stumble across him while Dream Walking and she'd decide to help. Of course she would, he's one of her subjects now and she cares for all her subjects.

What she sees is... much worse than she imagined having been told about the Daycare Attendant's past. Still she sees Moon, she sees where he is and what he's done. And in seeing Moon's cycles of harming others and self punishment she sees an oh so familiar filly from centuries ago. She sees him flailing in the seas of self loathing and, while no one was there for her, she refuses to let him drown.

After what feels like an eternity the nightmare is quelled, if only for the night. Princess Luna knows the ugly thing is biding its time until it can strike again. Moon's fears run much deeper than what can be vanquished in a single night. Still, through hours of work all is calm.

The animatronic and princess sit together on the remains of a scorched tower as it floats through the culmination of Moon's memories. The scene around them alien yet so familiar for both. Equestrian constellations and geometric neon stars swirl overhead as grassy hills padded with primary-colored rubber tile roll below. A cheery, obnoxious, grating tune floats through the air but neither pay it any mind. The new sounds of insects and nocturnal life help to drown it out anyhow.

Moon sits with the princess in silence and for a moment, just a moment, the blanket of the night isn't as suffocating as before.

Sun and Moon sometimes heckle each other from inside.

It started when they were on stage, as a friendly sort of ribbing. It quickly grew into something less good-natured as resentment grew between the two.

Sun calls Moon's laugh and rhymes annoying. They insist they can come up with better ones. They can't. If Moon is at a part of the story Sun dislikes, they sing as loudly and warbly as they can just to mess it up.

Moon usually just parrots Sun's words back to them their entire preformance, playing up the nasally tone to piss them off. Sometimes it manages to throw Sun off. Other times it mirrors Sun's emotions back at them, making a sort of negative feedback loop to make them too anxious to focus.

Things get worse once they're moved to the daycare. Sun gets to be out all the time and they don't hesitate to rub it in Moon's face.

Going through your blog since I came across a lovely post with Luna and Moon and now! Obsessed with Robots in Ponyville!

So I have a few questions and feel free to answer as many or as little as you want!

How does DCA react to colourful, talking, magical ponies?

Is the virus present here and does that affect much of the story and is there any effort to help get rid of it?

What role do they get (ie childcare, baking, etc) and where do they live during their time in Equestria?

Whats Twilights initial reaction and if this happens post Equestria Girls does she write to have any input from Sunset about these human looking robots?

Since we have an idea of Luna reaction/relationship with Moon whats it like with Sun? And how does Celestia react/interact with either of them?

Anon I am BITING YOU!!! I AM BITING YOU (POSITIVE)!!!! I'll answer with a bulleted list under the cut so as to not clog people's dashboards with a super long post. I am SO EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT IT!!!

Okay! Both are honestly terrified at first, but they react in different ways. Sun is the first to encounter the ponies and Moon's later direct encounter is informed by his memory of Sun's. Sun is a people pleaser, so he seems like he's going with the flow. He's not. He's just biding his time until he can find a way out of this mess. Moon decides to cause as many inconveniences as he can because he's not sure if the ponies are being genuine in their attempts to help them. He operates under a "you can't hurt me if I hurt you first" mindset.

The virus is very much still present! It's not as intense as it was in the Pizzaplex since the Daycare Attendant is no longer connected to the network, but it did fundamentally change them. The effects of the virus play a big role in both Sun/Moon's arcs. If the can get rid of it or not? Time will tell.

They live in Ponyville for the time being! They don't intend to have a permanent residence, so they kind of live with each of the Mane 6 for a while... Minus Rainbow Dash and not just because she lives in the clouds.

Twilight is FASCINATED. Equestria has never seen machinery as advanced as the DCA let alone anything that runs without magic. She's read about the multiverse theory of course, but seeing living(?) proof of it is mind blowing! I'll be honest, I didn't even consider EQG. I'm thinking Equestria Girls happens much later in the Robots in Ponyville timeline, if only for my own peace of mind. So Twilight has no idea what humans are.

Sun is very wary of both princesses. Luna because of the similarities between Nightmare Moon and his own lunar counterpart, and Celestia because he cannot understand her own actions. Moon kind of resents Celestia for what she did to Luna all those centuries ago, even if her sister has forgiven her. Celestia, like Luna, sees herself and her sister in the animatronic's relationship and wants to help them. She is annoyed by Sun's attitude, but doesn't show it most of the time. He may or may not occasionally manage to get under her skin.
