Middle Mark (A KH fanfic) pt. 1.
Walking along the shore line around the time of an impending storm on an island wasn't a very smart idea but that didn't stop a particular brunette with deep blue eyes from doing just that. Although it was only evening most of Destiny Islands' residents had already moved inside for supper with their friends or family but he simply wanted fresh air from his.
He didn't realize the soft drizzling of rain until he felt someone about to touch him. He jumped back in alarm but calmed down when he realized it was only Wakka.
"As alert as ever, ya?" The older man rubbed the back of his neck and softly sighed. "Come on in, Sora." The man nearly pleaded. "I know you think its boring here with Riku and Kairi away but not eating your dinner ain't going to bring them back any faster, ya?" The man scolded.
"Sorry Wakka, I'll be inside in a minute." Sora sighed.
"Wha-!" Wakka heaved Sora over his shoulder like he was as heavy as a beach ball. "Put me down!" Sora growled.
"Hell nah! If I give you a 'minute' you'll come in all wet and Tidus won't like that, ya!" Wakka dashed to their place.
Sora sighed in defeat and glanced back at the shore line. It hadn't really registered in his mind that he was looking a small figure who looking at him, until it was gone.
After what seemed like an eternity Sora managed to slip out of Wakka's sight. He made a dash for the waterfall. Everyone else was busy with one thing or another so no one would bother him that is if Wakka didn't notice his absence. It was lonely. Too lonely, but in it's own right perfect.
"Is this what it feels like to be useless?" Sora asked no one in particular as he sat on the Beach. It was quite quiet that night even for the island. The only things he could hear were the waves crashing on the shore, the palm trees rustling in the nightly breeze and the crickets' constant chatter.
He would have love to spar with someone or even train by himself but the thought of any sword play so soon left a bitter taste in his mouth. He brought his knees closer and tucked his head in between them.
It had been weeks since the test Master Yen Sid gave them and whilst Riku had passed, he had failed. It hurt more he could have imagined but he had to get over it. He just didn't trust himself to do anything anymore without messing up. Kairi, Lea and Riku were all out protecting the princesses and patrolling out for any potential threats to the light(*cough**cough* any signs of Xehanort*cough*) but here he was, laying on the sand like a slouch.
Xehanort. Xehanort! That lunatic made him so mad! For now all he could do was nothing!
He got up and started his nightly routine of looking around the islands when everyone else was asleep. It was strange at first when he had begun this activity. It seemed as if he was looking for something but that thing was hiding from him especially.
Other times he would line shells in beautiful patterns along the shore line for the smaller kids on the islands to find. It was funny when he heard that they made a legend that the shell monster would get angry if you touched his shells or messed up the formation so he was surprised to see that some of his patterns were still visible on the beach untouched by the ocean. He loved it more when the kiddos tried guessing what he made and making their own smaller versions of them.
'What was that?' He looked closely at one of the patterns before walking over to it.
He had to admit he didn't know what he was thinking when he made this one. It was actually really weird compared to the others. Shuffling sounds in the sand brought his back to reality when he realized he was looking right back into the green glowing eyes of... a heartless?
Startled he stumbled back and fell on his rear end. If anything the heartless looked amused. It backed away giving Sora the space to stand up but it continued to watch him with curiosity in it's eyes.
It opened its mouth and chattered a bit before surprising Sora even more.
"Aaare yoouuu oookaay?" It said in an uncertain tone as if it did not trust the language it just spoke in. It's voice was ragged, in a way dazed. It looked tired. Could heartless get tired?
Sora's eyes went wide as he stared in disbelief at the creature in front of him.
It was wearing a blue shirt, a black trench coat and a black pair of boots. It was as tall as Riku ,maybe taller, but had the head of a Shadow with longer antennae and the body stature of a Nobody heartless. It wore a lot of golden bands on the antennae that seemed to jingle when it moved. It didn't look bad for a heartless but maybe it wasn't, like Vivi, it did not have a visible Heartless Emblem as far as he could see. That didn't mean he did not keep his guard up around it. A heartless speaking any language aside from incoherent chittering was very surprising.
Boss Heartless were the only kind that came close to such a thing but they only came so far. Not to be demeaning but this didn't look like a boss Heartless to Sora.
'Am I dreaming or worse did I fall asleep on the Beach!? Is this actually happening?' Thoughts flooded his mind.
"You can talk?" Was the first thing he could comprehend to say and looked at the heartless wondering if he was crazy or not.
It smiled and nodded. The next thing Sora knew the Heartless talked again.
"I am Jonthiem and I have been looking forward to meet you! My my, plenty potential. Plenty potential!" Jonthiem exclaimed. He seemed pretty comfortable speaking the language now.
Sora was at a loss of words but then quickly remembered his manners. "Sora. Nice to meet you?" It didn't mean to come out as a question but it sounded like that. "I'm sorry but aren't you- I mean what do you mean by potential? Potential for what?"
Sora thanked the years of experience he had with his keyblade because in the next moment Jonthiem was above him in a flash. A Morning star pike over head as the assaulting heartless had a crazed smile and yellow slits as pupils overlaying his green iris. Sora blocked the pike hammer just in time but that didn't stop a jolt of electricity from shocking him in their parry. This was the heartless action he was used to.
It was as if a switch had flipped.
"Yes, yes a lot of potential!"
Sora didn't like this. This heartless showing up out of nowhere, when no was around. No! They had done so much to keep this place safe, so no way was he going to let the darkness try and take it again. Anger as much as wave of protectiveness pooled in him as his vision blurred.
Sora didn't know this yet but his switch was awfully close to the middle mark his eyes matched Jonthiem's. His adventure had just begun.
Feet planted and target clear he charged on.
