Just a few bullet-point list style thoughts about SPN 15.01, with a bit of character commentary.
The season opener song is the one they used for Kevin’s death in season 9. And they’ve just lost a younger person in their family, Kevin was like a younger brother, Jack like a son. DON’T TOUCH ME.
Sam, Dean, and Cas fighting off zombies together. I have waited. Years. For this.
Feelings I didn’t expect to have - what is Cas carrying Jack’s dead body for a thousand. Also Cas is so furious at the not!Jack. Should I remind you all now that last season Cas had to cope with Dean being possessed by Michael, Michael wearing Dean’s body. Now there’s a demon wearing their son’s dead meatsuit.
Dean thinks Cas is smart. I noticed that. They’re sniping and short-tempered and Dean still relies on him and not because he can magic whammy solve everything but Cas is smart and Dean looks to him to be the strategist Dean knows he is.
Grumpy Dean and Cas being all grumpy and intense and Cas as mediator. I am shocked by this completely unforeseen turn of events, shocked I tell you, shocked.
Just when I’d been thinking this not!Jack demon reminds me a little of crowley....Dean calls him “Crowley Jr.”
“He was our kid” oh no not again, I didn’t ask for this, this is not fair, ouch, I’m sad.
CAS IS AN ANGEL WITH A SHOTGUN THIS HAS COME TO PASS HE IS SHOOTING GHOSTS IN THE FACE. Becoming more and more like a hunter all the time. I loved seeing Sam and Cas working together to save people and Cas saving Sam.
“Move your exquisite ass, please.” LOL Dean and Rowena on the phone. That’s right Dean, you treat her with respect, she let herself be possessed by an archangel to save all of you.
“When you were in Hell with Alastair” OH NO THE NOT!JACK DEMON KNEW TORTURER DEAN IN HELL AND IS A FAN I HAVE BEEN AMBUSHED THIS IS AN ATTACK. Jensen’s perfectly underplayed response and the way Dean’s face shuts off, like I could feel the mental defenses slamming into place “that was a long time ago” was so perfect.
The cage is open? THIS WORLD’S MICHAEL IS ON THE LOOSE???
In the world of easter eggs, that stone clocktower was used in S4 and Dean and Cas had a scene in front of it.
When Dean got out of the car expressly just to come talk to Cas I actually said “uh oh they’re going to have a talk here comes the angst.”
Dean’s “you okay” to Cas and then a terse “good” and he walks away omfg they really suck at being done with each other, they suck so bad at it. Of course Dean has to check on Cas even though he’s not speaking to him. That’s how it is sometimes when we have issues with people we love. Okay Dean, you weren’t worried about him or anything, you didn’t check on him because you care, you’re still mad now quick walk away or someone might think you’re aren’t mad.
That scene with Dean patching up Sam and the knock knock joke was such a good moment reminding us of the history there and a reminder they’ve been doing this most of their lives. Dean and Sam have grown so much, and Sam isn’t that little kid, and Dean doesn’t have to be his protector 24/7, but being a big brother doesn’t just go away because of that.
Also interesting we have Cas tending to Sam’s wound, and Dean tending to Sam’s wound. While Sam is holding them together.
“It’s just us” isn’t a territorial battle cry for the bro bond (oh my I am shocked, shocked by this, network promos are never edited to remove context are they), it was about autonomy. Sam and Dean’s, yes, but the whole world, humanity, free of Chuck, who Sam hopes has moved on.
Dean’s “you and me against all the forces of Hell” pointedly leaves Cas out after Cas spent that whole ep shooting ghosts in the face and saved Sam’s life, which isn’t SPN or Dean dissing Cas, or a snack treat for the brosonlies, it makes Cas important, folks. It’s established Dean has issues with Cas. He feels cut off from his best friend so he reverts to just him and Sam now, even though Cas is *right there*, and while it’s good Dean has Sam, I’m sure it hurts that he feels so distanced from Cas.
This ep put Sam, Dean, Cas in a foxhole, had them fighting off zombies and ghosts together, showed Cas and Dean each looking after Sam, had Dean and Cas tension so thick you could cut it with a knife and being grumpy spouses with marital problems, Sam and Dean being brothers (which I enjoy so much more than the hyperdrama burn the world stuff of a few seasons ago), had them all feeling the loss of Jack. Despite the Dean and Cas tension, I felt them as a family unit and a team.

Here's a commision for the incomparable @tobythewise!
So if this demon inhabiting Jack is supposed to be the soul of a caveman why is he talking like he’s from Brooklyn or the Bronx?
