the underpainting & the painting!

been rly into underpaintings and experimenting with colors these days so thought I’d share why!! they’re the foundation of the painting, instead of starting with white (which is a highlight!), you start with a nice neutral foundation. I was using burnt sienna for awhile but have recently been using more pink. once I have that nice base, I go in with a purple to sketch out my composition and major shadows. then I add color from there! I like how it gives me a roadmap AND helps a painting feel more complete even when it’s not done because there’s always color, even if you haven’t filled it all in yet
