her best friend conrad is acting differently, hes mean and rude and brushing her off. FIRST TIME she gets male validation is from gas station guy (who immediately backs off when he finds out she’s underage) cam, and jere. she does not have feelings for these men. she loves connie but to her he doesnt even care about her anymore. of course she’s going to wait as long as she can for him & when jere tells her that hes thought about being with her, they kiss. thats it. no confirmation, “we’re bf gf now” just “lets go to the dance together”. and then she ends up dancing with connie bc jere was having a breakdown (not his fault). thats IT.
she wanted to go to cousins to be with conrad bc hes the only one who cares about / truly sees her but suddenly its a 180 from him, of course she’s going to be a mess! she doesnt know beck is dying! she doesnt understand what is happening AT ALL!

she’s 16-17 when beck dies! everyone is in their grief and no one checks on her! jere wont talk to her, her mom cant even function, and connie is struggling with his mother’s death! like when would anyone tell her to go to therapy??? ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION!!!!!

i was sobbing when belly drunkenly called her mom pleading for her to come fix everything. it was the ONLY time in the whole show that i ever cried. belly is just a lost, grieving girl. she TRIES! and everything never works out for her!
suddenly jere is there, hes giving her attention, conrad is LEAVING for stanford, OF COURSE she’s going to think she suddenly has feelings for jere!
the beginning of s3 is all about belly and jere’s weird codependent relationship were they use each other to hold onto the past (summers & beck)! she doesn’t go to therapy bc she thinks shes FINE!
THIS IS WHY SHE DECIDES TO MARRY HIM DESPITE HIM CHEATING!!!!!
her brother almost died bro!! this is just a really weird coping mechanism for these two now! belly is doubling down on her “everything is fine!! :)” while her whole world is burning around her and turning upside down (jere, her safe option who openly wants her and communicates that, unlike conrad, CHEATED!)!! like u have to understand this girl has completely mentally checked out!

belly is such a good character that explores grief when you're young and lost without guidance. she is a sweet, good kid who cares about and wishes to please / protect the people around her. i can understand when people are just watching the show as its marketed, a 'trashy teen chickflick' but there is clearly so much more here and i think jenny han is truly a mastermind when it comes to this series!
