Not a Twilight question. I’ve been following you for a while now, but I’m just now realizing you’re a librarian! I’m almost done with my Bachelor’s, and I’m really interested in becoming a librarian as well. Any tips for a future librarian? Also, do you work at a university or a public library? I think I want to be an academic librarian, but I’m still not completely sure.

Hello future librarian!

I work at a public library now, but during college I did work study at the college library, and my public library has a kind of unique symbiotic relationship with our local college library (we share an ILS/catalog and patrons of one or the other can borrow from both with some restrictions for digital and special collections), so I've got a little experience with academic libraries. They have a lot of the same functions (circulation, tech services, reference, interlibrary loan, children's, special collections/archives, periodicals) but different levels. For example, our public library circulates many more materials than our academic partner, but if you want to do serious research, their print materials and databases are better than ours.

The beauty of library school, at least in the United States, is that they don't super care what your Bachelor degree is, just that you have one. Mine was in Studio Arts and I was still accepted to library school no problem. I don't know how much the application process has changed since I did it, but I had to take the GRE and get three recommendation letters, so if you're nearly done with your bachelor's I'd start thinking about that.

I did my library degree online and there are a lot of programs that offer that now. Some of them are 100% online and others you maybe have to go in person once.

If you don't already work in a library (any kind of library, even if eventually you want to work in an academic one) I would encourage you to find a library job. Part time is fine! Good, even. And if you can't find a job, find a library to volunteer in. Getting your foot in the door helps a lot, and either a job or volunteering will give you experience. I also found it helpful to have that connection with a library while I was working on the degree.
