Every year when 9/11 rolls around and I see people in my age bracket talk about the desensitization they have to the day; I’m always reminded how different it was to grow up in a suburb of the city.

I live in what’s referred to as a “bedroom community”, basically it just means that most people are commuting out of the town for work and in my case typically NYC. So, myself and most of classmates had parents and relatives that were in the area the day of the attacks. Tons of kids had stories about how their parent was supposed to be at the WTC that day, but was off or running late. Some kids remember seeing the smoke and flames (I live near the beach and you can see the NYC skyline on a clear day from certain areas). My dad and uncle got stuck at their places of employment (my Uncle in manhattan and my dad in Newark) because they shut down mass transit and had no way to leave.

There was always a non zero chance that some kid was the relative of someone who had died or was a first responder, so they were more sensitive to showing clips or playing audio from the day because it wasn’t obvious who could’ve been impacted that day. Even though myself, and lot of my peers don’t remember the day specifically (I had just turned 3 and had started pre school the day before), it always felt like we did because everyone had such a personal connection to the day.

It just seems so different in comparison to everyone else where teachers would show footage and they’d go about their day. Idk, just an interesting thing that I’ve noticed as I’ve seen people talk about the day as I’ve gotten older, especially on social media.
