Reiji/Shun for the NOPT prompt if you're still doing it.
my NOTP too | I don’t ship it | it’s okay | I ship it hard | OTP
Good God, words are not enough to describe how much I loathe this pairing, and funny thing half of the reasons don’t even have to do with the ship itself but very unpleasant encounters with rabid shippers who tried to tell me I was “misinterpreting” Reiji by shipping him with anyone that wasn’t Shun (right around the time were I made public that I multishipped him) and made some very personal attacks that to this day make me bitter.
If there was two words I could use to describe this ship, it would be: Basic Yaoiz, because that’s all this ship ever amounted to in my eyes, everything I came across before I blocked it had it written all over it, from the uke/seme dynamics, to the chessy lines, to the visuals and the way it was written (yes, once upon a time I read some fic about them) and I’m simply not interested in any of that.
I have given a bit of thought to the twst NoTP ask I received a few days ago and had written a bit out before I started to overthink (?) it.
For the ones I'm including below, this is just a matter of my own personal taste. I have other NoTPs but I don't want to invite discourse to my blog. The fandom generates enough of that already all on its own!
First, I am super loyal to my OTPs. Therefore, a ship that breaks them up is by default a NoTP. Because I don't like them with other characters, a ship that adds a third party to make a polycule is also automatically a NoTP. (Is it still a NoTP if it’s a poly ship? 😋)
Second, I don’t want to badmouth anyone else’s OTPs or any ships that other people like. We can like ships with the tiniest of crumbs.
(I did this exact thing when I started shipping Jerza in Fairy Tail. Or when I started shipping SamaIchi in hypmic, back when I only knew the characters from Rhyme Anima and had none of the manga backstory.
For both of these, there was That Moment between them when I said “oh, these two have history!” and because of the intensity of That Moment, I started shipping them.)
We all like different things and different dynamics appeal to us all. Even for my NoTPs, I can usually at least see why someone else might ship them. It might be a ship that, if not for my own personal "I do not break up my OTPs" preference, I might ship them myself.
Except for Trey/Jade.
I do not get that ship at all. At all! I keep thinking of how Trey was all thinking “poor Jade, he is so taken advantage of by Azul and Floyd” and how Riddle was all like “are you even kidding me” and “you need new glasses if you can’t see what he’s really like” (paraphrasing)
You would think that would be comical to me. Trey "I'm just a normal guy" Clover with his little oyster sauce pranks and his 'don't like what I make for unbirthday parties? have fun making your own cakes then' and his whole Thing with Jade over the strawberries Jade needed for the Mostro Lounge because of Floyd, where he requested a strawberry tart from a famous patisserie (even though Jade then made Floyd stand in line for it since it was his fault in the first place)...
I realize that I am telling on myself by saying "yeah that's not enough for me. I still don't get it" considering some of the reasons I ship some of my OTPs, but that's where I am with that one.
There’s just something about their personalities that does not lend itself to the flavor of ship that I like. It’s a very popular ship, but it’s not for me.
On the other hand...
TreyRid
Even though this is another NoTP, I completely get this ship! Housewarden and vice housewarden! Hot headed vs level headed! Childhood friends! The aforementioned oyster sauce prank! Rook's whole "but I thought you wanted to make a strawberry tart for Riddle out of love!" and Trey's vehement denial! All of Book 1!
But the chemistry just isn’t there for me.
Also: TreyRid breaks up my FloRid OTP. I just don’t see Floyd or Riddle with anyone else.*
Maybe I just don’t like Trey with anyone else except Cater. 😋
*(Again telling on myself because Floyd calls Riddle a little goldfish once in Book 2 and it was That Moment when I started shipping them. Of course, every interaction between them since then has further cemented that OTP.)
I'm curious, can I ask what your ships are your NoTPs? Mainly from Twisted Wonderland?
Obviously, you can ask, but this is a little more straightforward than "ship bingo" or "give me a ship and I'll answer three questions about why I do or don't ship them" and if I'm not careful, it might come across as me being a rude donkey about other people's ships.
(Why a donkey? I don't know. It's the first thing that popped into my head.)
I will ponder this for a while. And while I do that, I will decide if I do answer, whether I should
include a reason (if I have one...sometimes I just don't like something!)
interpret “mainly from Twisted Wonderland” as “only from Twisted Wonderland” since I don’t know what other fandoms you might be curious about.
(Although I would happily give you [REDACTED] from the JJBA fandom for free because the Jojo fandom has made me hate that ship with a fiery passion.)
my NOTP too | I don’t ship it | it’s okay | I ship it hard | OTP
i feel ya on this one, anon. i have very few notp’s but this happens to be one of them. i see them as too much of a father-son relationship to find the ship appealing. as well as my belief that the revolutionary and civil wars created a severe rift between them that exists to this day in some way
(also let me point out that i have absolutely no problem with people that ship any of my notp’s. i’m not going to ever judge a person based on what they ship)
my NOTP too | I don’t ship it | it’s okay | I ship it hard | OTP
Forever my Notp, but then, you knew that didn’t you?
I think what gets me about this is that this enmity was entirely Seto’s fault. Jou did nothing to him, and despite being touted as cool and stoic, Seto instigated pretty much all of their spats. From the very first time he appeared, he was instantly antagonistic, ranging from schoolyard pettiness to outright loathing (”He should’ve stayed dead!”--Battle City)
It doesn’t help that he finds even more reasons to hate Jou over the course of the series, so its not as though their relationship really improved. A (incomplete) list of Jounouchi’s perceived “crimes”:
Daring to play (and excel at, no matter what Seto like to deny) Duel Monsters--especially considering he’s a rookie.
Earning the trust and respect of Seto’s greatest rival (and how worse that would get if Seto found out Atem lost to him).
“Distracting” said rival from dueling him.
Jounouchi’s entire personality is at odds with his.
