Reincarnated as a sword is like, a really good novel (albeit with some gender role fuckery and focusing slightly too much on stuff like blonde+blue eyes='princely'), up till volume 5 , where they introduce a caricature of a trans woman kinkster (who has an afro! Scary!) whom the author exclusively refers to with they/them

In the Web novel they also made her a pedophile, and proceeded to argue that actually she's a very good samaritan so this is fine and then proceeded to be okay with her

I'm reading the light novel now and please god let them drop the pedophilia plotpoint and just make her story arc be that the main characters learn to be okay with different people

the genre is gay. it’s really fucking gay. the genre is scifi alien lesbians in space that’s how gay it is.

so to start off, i’ll give a quick rundown of the species and setting. the main species included are shifters and taisiman—shifters are a species from an earthlike planet called hymon, and can change their physical appearance to a certain degree. there’s limitations (can’t heal wounds or shift to the opposite sex) but beyond that they can do a lot of neat things like create gills and elongate their bones to be taller. shifters have what’s called a “true form” which is the one they were born with but due to cultural reasons showing it to anyone but a lover or close family is frowned on.

unfortunately due to this, at least on hymon, shifters are seen as untrustworthy, which is not so great for the mc, denyva hessgrim, who is a shifter, and has been hiding this fact for the last decade due to the fact that she has a fairly high-level government job.

taisiman are from the planet pth and are a humanoid species with wings that range between six and a half feet and seven and a half feet. they also have a crest of feathers rather than hair on their heads, and the crest feathers are used to indicate emotions.

pth and hymon are planets in the galactic federation, a group of planets who have diplomatic relations and coexist mostly in peace. to further promote interspecies relations and reduce hostility and animosity, every two years the galactic federation hosts the galactic gladiatorial games on the capital planet, evos-kall. each species that’s part of the Galactic Federation sends citizens (chosen by random lotto, the number of citizens from each species chosen is equivalent to the number of planets in the Federation) to evos-kall’s grand coliseum. members of each species are assigned a number that corresponds with a team-number, and there’s one of each species on each team. The teams compete against each other in pairs, and the winner progresses to the next tier, until only one team is left.

denyva (nyv for short) and luce kavnoir, the taisiman who’s the other lead, meet because they’re assigned to the same team. nyv initially mistrusts the other members of her team, especially luce, who’s naturally friendly and tries to get her to open up. despite that, though, over the course of the games nyv slowly opens up and begins to be more true to herself, something she’s always had a hard time with (she’s fairly feminine by hymon standards, something she’s uncomfortable with but has never had the courage to change, which luce manages to convince her is worth changing so she can be more comfortable), and begins to trust luce.

each tier of the games is engineered to specifically be solvable only through teamwork, with the strengths of a single species being more key in one challenge each—for example, an illusionist’s abilities are the key in one challenge, and a shifter’s in another. the final tier of this year’s games requires a shifter’s abilities, and requires nyv to finally utilise her shifter abilities to their full extent, which acts as a sort of catharsis and finally allows her to begin to stop being ashamed of them.

the night before they win, luce asks nyv what she wants most, and nyv replies that she wants to be comfortable with herself. when luce asks why she’s not, nyv replies that she fears herself.

the next day, after they win, luce  takes her to the evos-kall equivalent of a shopping-mall—which nyv initially hates, but after luce explains her purpose (clothing and food) she decides to give it a try, and manages to finally dress and present herself as she feels most comfortable. during this time, luce and nyv grow even closer and nyv manages to admit to herself, and later to luce, that she’s interested in the other. the novel ends with nyv happy and proud of herself, and with close friendships to those she was on a team with during the games.

have added maybe a maximum of 3000 words to my novel since september and not for lack of ideas trust that i've been having thoughts i just havent sat down to write barely at all because i've been busy and also other reasons but i opened the doc and wrote a little bit today and guys did you know the novel im writing is the best novel ever???
