Rec: One of the most charming and well-crafted kidfics in this fandom, this is told entirely from the point of view of Tristram Holmes, Sherlock's 8-year-old son. The story is nominally gen, but there is an underlying attraction and tension between Sherlock and John that runs as a constant tantalizing tease throughout. There are plenty of humorous, cute, sweet and tender moments, but the meat of the story involves a very serious - and dangerous - case that puts both Tristram and John's daughter directly in harm's way. Mind the warnings, therefore, as there are scenes which might be distressing (although no permanent injury is done).

P.S. I was so taken with these characters that I wrote a 2-part spinoff: The Tristram Holmes AU.

Baby's First

There's a room in Sherlock's Mind Palace--Tristram's room--dedicated to collecting and saving the important milestones in Tristram's life.

Parentlock! Funny story: this fic was written by the woman who won me (Quinn Anderson) is AO3's fundraiser. :) I went lurking through her profile while I was getting ready to write her fic and found this little gem. Needless to say, I thought this was adorable. Sherlock is characterised quite well: he obviously loves his son, but he can still be irritable and impatient. Tristram is just about the weirdest name I've ever heard, but with a man called Sherlock for a father, I can see how it came about. Tristram is the result of a tryst between Sherlock and Irene that the former regrets from the start. He has no idea what to do with an infant and even less patience for trying to figure it out. It's beautiful to watch their relationship evolve, however, and I thought the author set a very natural pace. I really loved how the author decided to tie in the Mind Palace and Tristram room in it. There are objects in the room that Sherlock has associated with memories, and she goes through and details what each one represents by telling their stories. It's beautiful! The soil samples bit nearly made me cry, I swear. The whole thing is just an excellent mixture of Sherlock's brusque nature, the trials and tribulations of parenthood and overwhelming paternal love.
