Remixes! A long and varied tradition, with as many flavours as there are fandoms. But for Dimilix Work It Out On The Remix: The Dimilix Week 2025 Remix Event, we're keeping it simple, we're doing it all—to remix means to re-imagine.

Whether another creator's work or your own, canon or fanon, or a past prompt—this is a chance to get a little creative, a little wild. Maybe even get a little Dimilix freaky with it!

Some of the most upfront remixing is fic based on art or art based on fic. But for some more remix ideas, here's a few:

What's a remix challenge, Stell?

I'm so glad you asked. Here's how it works:

Everyone signs up and answers a brief questionnaire

The mods pair writers together based on their preferences, both as writers (“I can write this pairing; I probably can’t write this pairing”) and as readers

Here’s the fun part: once you’re assigned your partner/writer, you get to pore through their fic catalog and pick the story you’d like to remix. Remixing can kind of be anything, as long as the basic events of the original story are the same. For example, you can write a prequel, a sequel, a version of the story that’s dialogue only, a version that fills in a scene we don’t actually get to see in the original version, a version told from the POV of a book on a bookshelf–whatever. So long as the events of the originally story remain intact, go for it.

Anyone curious what a remix challenge is all about? I posted this one shot when the 2016 (holy snap how is that 4 years ago??) sherlolly remix challenge was going on, for the purpose of giving one example of how to remix a fic. In this case, it’s a POV switch from the one @thisisartbylexie wrote, which is linked to my one shot on AO3. Remixing a fic can be supes fun and there’s a number of ways to do it!

“Fine,” Sherlock gasped out, also laying there catching his breath.

"I um...I don't mind," she said, trying to pull her hair back in some sort of more normal looking ponytail again. “But I’d rather keep this quiet, since it’s um…just so…”

“Casual?”

Molly winced inwardly a little at the word. “Right, I suppose. I just don’t want everyone constantly asking-“

“Neither do I,” Sherlock instantly agreed. He rolled over and kissed her soundly before pulling back and staring into her eyes rather affectionately for a moment. “This is nobody’s business but ours.”
