Prompt: “If I’m a monster, what are you?” / “[Name]! Open the door!”
“Help me! Please!” It was definitely Henrik’s screams he heard, half-muffled by his bedroom door.
Marvin waved his fingers, willing his book shut with a soft ruffle of ancient, yellowed pages. He abandoned it with a sigh. Henrik was probably having nightmares again, as he often did when he finally managed to make it to sleep, which wasn’t a common occurrence nowadays, for any of them, really. Especially not him, he thought, noting the time as he left his study; just after 3AM.
“Henrik?” He called softly, approaching the doctor’s bedroom door and raising a hand to quietly knock his knuckles against it. “Henrik, wake up.”
He pressed his ear to the door, surprised to hear nothing; the wood was embarrassingly thin, and Henrik tended to be loud when dreaming.
“Henrik?” He asked again, reaching for the doorknob. Locked. “Henrik!” He exclaimed, voice rising, green sparks flying from the tips of his fingers. There was something wrong. “Open the door!”
He heard a cackle, and his blood ran cold. Stepping back, Marvin rammed his foot into the door, breaking the lock and sending it swinging open and cracking into the adjacent wall.
“You!” He snarled, stepping into the room, cat’s eyes fixed on the unconscious doctor, and the creature in his bed.
Anti held Henrik like a lover would; arms wrapped around him in an embrace that would’ve been convincing had it not been for the slender, sharp knife pressed into Henrik’s throat.
Anti cackled out a laugh that rang around the room. “Me?” He rasped, eyes wide, lit with a gleam that sent shivers down Marvin’s spine.
Marvin stalked forward, crossing the room in a few short strides. Flames crawled from his fingers to his hands, from his hands all the way up to his elbows, painting wavering, emerald patterns across the painted walls. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” he said. “I’m going to send you back to the hole you crawled out of, you-”
Another cackle, static-soaked and green. “Monster? Is that what you were going to say?” Anti’s form fizzed, and suddenly he was not in bed with the doctor anymore but standing right in front of Marvin, knife pointed upward at his throat. “Such a cl-i-i-i-che. Monster. Say,” he fizzed again, flickered out of existence, reappeared behind Marvin with a pop. “If I’m a monster, what are you?”
He laughed. Hysterically and loud. And he was still laughing when Marvin spun, only to find that he wasn’t there anymore, and that he was alone in that darkened room, left only with his bleeding, unconscious doctor.
