@aspphorg • Today’s focus is #MaternalAndChildHealth. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 31% of women who will become pregnant and give birth in the US will face pregnancy complications. These complications disproportionately affect African Americans, as black mothers are 6x more likely to die due to pregnancy complications than white mothers (Journal for Perinatal Education). Improving education and bias training, expanding access to prenatal and perinatal care, and advocating for policies that address maternal health gaps through programs and funding help to decrease pregnancy complications and improve maternal and child health. It’s National Public Health Week! 

We work to prevent, protect against and respond to emergencies to keep New Yorkers safe.

A coastal storm, an anthrax attack, a flu pandemic – whatever the emergency, we are charged with critical preparedness and responses roles, with the primary goal of protecting the public’s health. 

We do this through partnerships with various city, state and federal agencies, health care facilities and community leaders and organizations to better protect and meet the needs of New York City citizens.
