It's September 10th, which means today is World Suicide Prevention Day. It feels like absolutely no time at all has passed since last Sept. 10th, but I guess living through a time that has you in a constant state of disbelief can do that to you. Politics have a very real impact on our lives; to claim differently shows a particular kind of privelege and even a kind of disregard for the lives and experiences others live. I've been reflecting on this years TWLOHA prompt, and, I'll be honest here, I have no idea how to respond to it. I thought my answer for this years prompt could be mainly relating to politics or ethics, but that feels kind of disingenuous. So I've been looking at other's posts about this and it seems like there are two main threads we can follow, either use #IWasMadeFor to directly answer the prompt or the broader message of #StayFindOutWhatYouWereMadeFor which is represented pretty widely in the promo materials for this years National Suicide Prevention Week. I don't have an answer for the first prompt- I could answer with something relating to my career goals but our careers don't always necessarily reflect our passions even when we hope they will- so I'm going to focus on the second and try to make this post a bit more general than my posts have been in the past. Determining what you were made for feels like it has a particularly religious message attached to it. If that works for you that's great, but if you're like me and religion isn't really your thing it can be difficult to feel like there's supposed to be some predetermined purpose for your life. So don't. Your purpose in life, what you were made for, doesn't have to be some predetermined thing; it can be whatever you want it to be. What are you passionate about? What keeps you going? What makes you happy? What makes you feel fulfilled? If it's your art or writing or craft that makes you happy or keeps you going that can be your purpose. If it's social justice and activism that drives you that could be what you were made for. If you have absolutely no idea yet, that's okay too! Stay and we can find what you were made for together. #NSPW17 #WSPD17 #TWLOHA
