Chapter 9

The cottage windows are open to let in the sea breeze, and Gwyn hums under her breath as she kneads dough on the flour-dusted counter. She swings her braid over her shoulder, strands of copper catching the afternoon light that slants through the kitchen.

She’s alone today. Nesta left this morning with Lucien, something about walking the cliffs and working through one of his puzzles. Emerie is at Nuan’s workshop. She has been spending more and more time there, though she hasn’t said why. Gwyn suspects, but she doesn’t push. Emerie will talk when she’s ready.

The solitude should feel peaceful. The cottage is warm, the dough is soft under her hands, and the sound of the waves is a constant, soothing rhythm.

Instead, she feels restless.

She’s been feeling restless for weeks now, ever since Azriel started visiting. He comes every few days, always with some excuse—checking on Nesta, bringing supplies from Velaris, discussing security measures with Lucien. But he always finds his way to wherever Gwyn is. The market, the cliffs, the cottage.

He shows up, and they talk about nothing important, and then he leaves, and every time he does, Gwyn feels something twist in her chest—frustration and longing and confusion all tangled together.

She punches the dough harder than necessary.

The knock at the door makes her freeze.

She knows it’s him before she wipes the flour from her hands and crosses to answer. As if her thoughts have summoned him.

Some part of her always knows when it’s Azriel. It has been that way since those early days in the library when she’d feel his presence before she’d see him.
