Sharing this information from my beautiful sister Regrann from @tiffyisahippie - Today is the 32nd anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. On April 26th, 1986, the disaster occurred during a late-night safety test when all safety systems were intentionally turned off, which simulated a station blackout power-failure. In a disastrous combination of events that resulted in uncontrolled reaction conditions, the reactor’s cooling waters flashed into steam generating a destructive steam explosion and a subsequent open-air graphite fire. This fire produced considerable updrafts for about nine days. These lofted plumes of fission products where shot into the atmosphere and radioactive material precipitated onto parts of the western USSR and Europe. The accident killed 49 people and caused over 6000 documented cases of cancer from the radiation, but we will never know how many undocumented cases are out there.
