#nursery work

Ok nothing to do with lost boys but I just finished working in a nursery and I felt the need to share some conversations I have had:

Me: no thank you, get the soap pump out of your ear.

Kid: I want to hear the bubbles.

Me: that’s not how it works.

Me: did kid take her underwear off?

Colleague: no, she’s wearing underwear.

Me: then what is she holding?

Colleague: emotional support knickers.

Me: …

Colleague: She won’t put them down according to her parents.

Me: right then.

Kid: my mummy doesn’t like tomatoes *runs away screaming*

Me: walking feet and inside voice!

*out on a walk after it rained *

Kid: so many worms!

Me: yeah all wiggling around.

Kid: *stomps on one dramatically* all gone.

Me: no thank you we don’t climb the furniture. Feet on the floor.

Kid: * standing on a table looking me in the eyes * my feet are on a higher up floor.

Me: uh no thank you, kid one you can’t sit in the dressing up box and kid two you can’t sit in the LEGO box, get out please.

Kids: *swap boxes and look at me with a smile*

Colleague: wording is important.

The absolute Bullshit of having literally just put out a fire at the registers and then having customers still coming up trying to make purchases and check out.

Either fuck off for five minutes or leave, I don't care which but either way leave me the fuck alone. Goddamn.

So I found this cocoon unburied in one of the liner pots because (what I assume was) a deer got into the hoop house, tore a bunch of my cuttings out, ate the leaves and left the stems. A whole nursery of plants to munch on, and you go for my babies. Rude.

Knowing these guys like to pupate underground, I filled a smaller pot with soil and reburied it just under the surface, and literally the next day this guy emerges!

This is a Broad-Bordered Bee Hawkmoth (Hemaris fuciformis). It took a couple of hours to dry its wings and had taken off by the time I got back from my lunch break. What a treat!

Anyway here’s the aforementioned deer damage. I mean. Good to see they’re rooting.

I replanted them. They’ll be fine.

Even after so many years, I still feel lucky I’m getting paid to fill wagons with flowers. 🌺
