💫 - stargazing for nurseyrans?
Rae, my darling, my angel, my sweet, actual sunshine and light of my life, I am so sorry this took me so long to write! I originally thought I’d incorporate this into the longer nurseyrans fic I’m writing but I don’t think I will at this point. I came home tonight though and felt such soft things and wanted to write something soft and this was my go-to. I hope you enjoy it :)
also, sidenote, but I listened to the nutcracker while writing this? like - the whole score for the ballet or whatever and like it’s such good music for this tbh. ok well anyway, enjoy! :)
When Ransom texted him at 11pm on a tuesday night, asking him to come over to the Haus and join him in the reading room, Derek expected something was up.
The entire walk from his dorm to the Haus was spent wondering what kind of double entendre could be discerned from “join me in the reading room”. He assumed his boyfriend might wanna hook up - what wholesome purpose was there for an 11 pm text on a tuesday night? Derek knew of none.
But when he walked up to the Haus he looked up and saw that Ransom may have actually meant for him to join him in the reading room, seeing as the other man was already up on the roof waiting.
“Hey,” Derek said, waving slightly as he walked up the lawn and came to a stop in the middle of the walkway in front of the porch steps.
“Hi,” Ransom said, smiling down at him. “You gonna come up?”
“What exactly is it we’re gonna be doing up there?”
“Please just get your ass up here, I’m cold and you’re supposed to be keeping me warm.”
Derek laughed, then made his way inside, shouting his hello’s to the guys in the kitchen without stopping in, taking the stairs two at a time and then making his way out the hall window onto the roof, where Ransom was waiting with the blanket held open so Derek could join him under it.
He settled in and made himself comfortable, wrapping an arm around Ransom’s shoulder and pulling him to lean back on his chest as he leaned back against the wall behind him.
“Hi,” Ransom murmured quietly.
“Hi,” Derek said, pressing a kiss to Ransom’s cheek. “Everything ok?”
“S’perfect,” Ransom said. “I was just up here looking at the stars and I thought that the only thing that would make this better would be if you were here with me.”
Derek smiled, his stomach filling with butterflies and his face warming at how fuckin’ sweet Ransom could be.
“You know it, babe,” Ransom replied.
He was looking up at the sky, so Derek tilted his head back so he could look too, the two of them settling into a quiet contemplation of the sky’s beauty.
“Do you know any actual constellations?” Derek asked, making sure to keep his voice low and light.
“Nope,” Ransom replied. “Well, I know of some of them, but I can’t actually point them out. What about you?”
“I can usually find Orion,” Derek said, trailing off as he scanned the sky above him. “I took Astro 10A during my frog year, and we had 9pm section where we had to look out telescopes and shit, it was really chill.”
“Sounds nice,” Ransom said.
“Mhm,” Derek hummed. “There,” he said, pointing out into the night sky. “Do you see, just above the satellite on that house?”
“Ok,” Ransom said, directing his attention in the direction Derek was pointing.
“If you look up, you see that line of 3 real close together?”
“One…two, three, yeah, I see them.”
“That’s Orion’s belt,” Derek said. “And if you look just slightly down, almost perpendicular to it is another line of 3, and then out to each side are one and two feet. See it?”
“I see the whole guy now, yeah,” Ransom said, his voice quiet and breathy. “That’s neat… It’s so beautiful.”
Derek smiled, setting his chin on Ransom’s shoulder so he could look at his face. “Yeah, you are.”
Ransom smiled wide, turning toward him and leaning away so he could look at him. “Smooth, Nurse.”
“Me? You’re the one who called me up here to stargaze. You set the romantic tone, I’m just trying to keep up over here.”
“Well you’re doing a good job,” Ransom said.
His eyes fluttered closed as he rocked slightly into Derek, and Derek tightened the arm around his shoulders and brought the other up to loop around him and pull him in closer.
They stayed cuddled up like that, staring out into the night and reveling in each other’s company well past the time the rest of the street grew quiet and went to bed, well past the point where even the lights in the downstairs kitchen were turned off, and the only thing lighting up the world as they could see it from their perch was the moonlight, reflecting off thousands of twinkling stars smiling down at them.
