This post is mostly an excuse to figure out how to tag, partially an excuse to put more content on my blog, and definitely an excuse to talk about my gods. So. My gods! My main go-tos are: Nisaba, the light of my life and lady of my home, Goddess of Scribes, Barley, and the Written Word. (I'm giving you the cliffnotes version rather than the polytheist rant, so. That's a good summary.) Nuska, god of the lamp at night. His job is to burn evil magic, generally. Protector god who fights off demons, his symbol is seen on the Pazuzu plaque in position to defend a bedside from the horrible demon Lamashtu, who is never welcome near me or my family. I go to him a lot concerning anxiety and nightmares. In addition to them, I go to: Ereshkigal, Utu, Enki, Inanna, Ninhursag, Gula, and Nanshe with relative frequency. I pay respects to Tiamat, but she's technically not Sumerian, very dead, and the story is complicated. Ereshkigal- queen of the House of Dust Utu- god of the sun, laws, travel, divination, protects against gidim, sometimes judges the dead Enki- god of fresh water, purification, magic, creativity, wisdom, fertility, creator of mankind who organized the world Inanna- goddess of passion, sex, war, lady who changes man into woman and woman into man Ninhursag- wife of Enki, mother goddess, lady of the cultivated earth Gula- goddess of medicine in all forms, dogs Nanshe- goddess of social justice, fishermen, dream divination On occasion I say a word or two for Nanna, the god of the moon, and Uttu, the goddess of weaving and the first married woman. I pay respect to a lot of gods as they are relevant, to be honest, but I never let a day go by without saying something to Nisaba.

A rather obscure and poorly preserved small tablet from the Seleucid period found at Warka (ancient Uruk) enumerates the parts of the liver (with which the gall bladder is, as customary, associated) or the marks on it, called "station" and the like, and gives for each a correspondence with a God, a month, and a constellation. To quote some of the better understood lines: "The "station" is Enlil; month I; [Aries]. The "path" is Šamaš; month II; Taurus. The "sweet mouth" is Nusku; month III; Orion. The "strength" is Uraš; month IV; Cancer, Plow-star. The "gate of the palace" is Ninegal; month V; Regulus. The "bubble" is the Storm God Adad; month VI; Raven star. The gall bladder is Anu; month VII; Libra. The "finger" (identifiable as the processus pyramidalis) is God (broken); month VIII; Goat star."

On Nuska: #justpolytheistproblems

I talk a lot about Nisaba, and for good reason. She's the goddess I'm sworn to, and very important to me. But I know I have a habit of hyperfocusing, and I know I love Nuska too. It's just that I have no idea how to express it sometimes. I write poetry for him, I praise him, I've got an icon and a candle for him on my altar, but. I want to give him something special. Yes, there's the food offering, but. I mean. I've offered bullet shells to Inanna and massive works of poetry to Nisaba. Nuska is a fire god, and more specifically deals with torches, lamplight, and purifying fire. What protects you at night, pretty much. He's also the vizier of Enlil who orders the E-kur, maintains it and keeps it spotless in addition to seeing out Enlil's commands. In my practice I view him as the son of Nanna and Ningal, and Gibil as a bit of a separate-but-related deity in charge of more work-oriented fire (cookstove, kiln, forge). Nuska is also an intermediary between a supplicant and the gods, as a god of fire which carries incense smoke and offerings to the heavens. So what on earth could I possibly get him as a gift? I have a nice incense burner, candles for days, the clay lamp I made for him as an icon. I don't really need more candles. Maybe a specific incense, like how I burn vanilla for Nisaba? But I don't know if that feels right either. I mean, I have a hunch about cinnamon incense, but. I can't exactly buy a bunch of tiki torches, and putting an old electric nightlight up there just wouldn't seem right either. Let's face it, they're pretty ugly. So. What do? I guess I'll figure something out, but feel free to commiserate or shout ideas.
