it's here!! i'm out of my mind EXCITED. i still don't like how the creator of this show sought advice from one of the most bigoted imams on earth (ustadz abdul somad can go screw himself, what a misogynistic, racist, hateful person), but i have faith they're not gonna make the religious teachings too unbearable. the creator himself is conservative so i'm also worried about that. they did show nussa and rara befriending other muslim kids of a different gender than them, so at least there's no segregation, plus the series has songs, so they're ignoring the "music is haram" thing for education purposes. on the other hand, the show never shows any muslimah kids who aren't hijabis, and i feel they're sort of denying their existence. i mean, rara, nussa's sister, is like, 6 and she's already wearing hijab full-time...that really says something about what they're taught in the household. extremism shouldn't be prevalent here and i pray to God it isn't.
Brief thoughts on the trailer:
most of it is the same as the teaser, so my initial thoughts on the movie is still the same. the animation is superb and there's an implication of divorce between nussa's parents, plus the main plot of it is nussa losing his confidence in himself after seeing all the cool stuff the new kid in his school, Joni, can do, and his target is to beat him at the school science competition.
we don't know the actual plot, and i might be way off base, but let me reiterate that i'm getting a lot implications that nussa's parents are headed for divorce. if that's the case, it would be super cool bc divorce is sort of a taboo subject amongst the conservative muslim community, a.k.a. the demographic this movie is targetting. nussa asks when his dad is coming home, so there might be him being a neglectful parent too, which is ALSO a taboo subject. with family being such an important aspect in islam (to the point that many are unable to spot abuse and other sorts of conflict in the family since it's glorified so much), touching on the subject of a broken family life is a pretty daring choice for an islamic edutainment kids show. i hope they handle it well.
i am incredibly uncomfortable on the ableist the vibes i'm getting from nussa's story. they put an establishing shot on his prosthetic leg over a voiceover of nussa's dad saying how nussa never gives up. don't do this, please. we get a disabled muslim kid of colour and he's already being tokenized as inspiration porn. he's just an ordinary kid with big dreams, don't center his personality on his disability so much.
i really hope nussa and joni become friends in the end. joni is painted as the antagonist, but he's not doing anything wrong. it's not his fault he's good at science and has the money to get better supplies for a fancier rocket. i think this is one of the instances where nussa sees him as a threat, but joni just does not catch on bc all he's really doing is sharing his knowledge. it would be really funny if throughout the movie, nussa just keeps acting hostile towards him, but joni is being friendly and practices good sportsmanship when they compete against each other.
only way to find out is to watch the movie! the time frame of the movie spans through ramadhan, so i'm guessing it'll probably be out in april? i hope it's in theatres bc i don't really have access to streaming services. all in all very excited!
