Today I had the privilege to work with Stephen Hough, perhaps one of the greatest pianists of our time and someone whom I looked up to most during my piano study days. His playing is reminiscent of the golden era of piano playing, full of color and texture as well as phrasing inspired by the bel canto singers of that era. It's no exaggeration that I probably own all his recordings. Besides being a textbook polymath, he is also one of the most humble people I know.

Seriously though - to have a free resource like this, as a musician, is super cool and under-utilized. It's like a library for bowings.

LOS ANGELES (The New York Times) — Gustavo Dudamel, the charismatic conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, whose fiery baton and bouncy curls have made him one of classical music’s most recognizable figures, will leave his post in 2026 to become the music director of the New York Philharmonic, both orchestras announced on Tuesday.

“What I see is an amazing orchestra in New York and a lot of potential for developing something important,” he said in an interview. “It’s like opening a new door and building a new house. It’s a beautiful time.”

The appointment of Dudamel, 42, is a major coup for the New York Philharmonic, the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, which was once led by giants including Mahler, Toscanini and Bernstein. Just a decade ago, there were concerns about its future, given the languishing efforts to renovate its lackluster hall and questions about its artistic direction. Now its home, David Geffen Hall, has reopened after a $550 million renovation, and it has secured in Dudamel the rare maestro whose fame transcends classical music, even as he is sought by the world’s leading ensembles.

His departure is a significant loss for Los Angeles, where since 2009 Dudamel has helped build a vast cultural empire and helped turn the orchestra into one of the most innovative and financially successful in the United States.

He was lured east by Deborah Borda, the New York Philharmonic’s powerful president and chief executive, in an instance of classical music history repeating itself. She signed the 26-year-old Dudamel to the Los Angeles Philharmonic back when she led that ensemble, and helped make him a superstar in its relatively new Walt Disney Concert Hall. Now she hopes to repeat that success in New York.

NYフィルのフリーコンサートには、お気に入りのチーズを買いに行くところから始まる。

毎年行われる「Concerts in the Parks」は、ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニックによる無料コンサートで、セントラルパーク他、4箇所のパブリックパークで行われる。

陽の落ちる頃、クラシックミュージックに野外で浸るという、なんとも心地よいイベントで6月頭から楽しみでならない。ただパブリックなイベントなので早めの場所取りが必要。

そこで夕方ぐらいからピクニックしながら待つというのも、また醍醐味である。

ということで、お気に入りのリトルイタリーの「 DI PALO’S (ディパロズ)」へ。

ここは、1925年から続く、ハム、チーズ、パスタ等を揃えるイタリアのお惣菜屋さん。語り出すと長くなるので、今回はさらりとご紹介。

肉類は、Prosciutto di Parma、Mortadella、Salamini Cacciatoriを、チーズは、Parmigiano-Reggiano、Gorgonzola Dolce、あと名前は忘れてしまったけど、栗の葉に包まれて熟成されたクリスタルなテクスチャーのチーズと、クランベリーとワインに漬け込まれたチーズをチョイス。どれも注文したら試食させてくれるのだが、その時点でテンションがあがり、すごくワインが欲しくなる。

さてさて、時間があったのでサラダ作って、飲み物買ってーいざゆかん！

セントラルパークはメトロポリタンミュージアムの裏手、広大な芝生の Great Lawn を会場に、各自敷物を持参して場所取りを行う。

コンサートは8時から始まるので、早めに行って芝生で夕食をとるのがオススメのスタイル。

野外なので、子供連れでもクラシックを聞けるっていうのがありがたい(泣き出したらさすがに焦るが)。

夕日が差し込む頃には奥〜の方まで人で埋め尽くされる。

変わりゆく空の色とともに音楽を楽しむ。

へと、コンサートは盛り上がりを見せる。

あたりはもう真っ暗、空に舞っていく風船は、グループの目印にしてたものだろう。もうここで朝を迎えたい。

最後の楽曲

Gershwin An American in Paris を終え、大勢の拍手で幕を閉じる。

最後は、ステージの反対側からNYの高層ビルを背景に花火が上がる。

さぁ　これから夏本番だ。
