Same energy.
Benthos
The silty mud squished between his toes as he edged further and further out into the river. The water was cold, even in the heat of the summer, and it rushed past his legs in the shallows without enough strength to pull even his small frame off balance. Lyrin’a peered down into the clear water, bent at the waist as he followed the example of his older sisters.
They were hunting for crayfish. The tiny little crustaceans blended into the colors of the rocks beneath, only giving away their locations when something large and threatening bumped into them or veered too close. And then they darted off for cover of large rocks or deeper water. Keen eyes could spot them, with practice, but for a learner it was a lot of trial and mostly error. Lyrin’a shuffled, face nearly touching the water as he stared into the riverbed with a dogged single mindedness. He’d picked up a dozen crayfish sized rocks and one suspicious tangle of leaves and twigs but no crayfish when a flick of movement out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. The skittering critter was quick, it shot out toward the middle of the river with a burst of desperate speed. Lyrin’a jumped after it, splashing through the deepening water, eyes only on the retreating snack. He yelped when the sandy bottom gave way beneath his feet. The riverbed opened up, sloping down sharply to accommodate the vastness of the water flowing along it. The water was not any faster, but it was cold. Lyrin’a was beneath the surface before he could think on it, arms and legs flailing in a panic at the suddenness of his descent. His yelp became a shriek, and then an inhale of water. His lungs burned. His arms ached. He looked up, and for a moment the urgency stopped as he watched the sun’s rays break through the water and fracture into a million beautiful shards of light.
And then a hand was grasping his wrist and yanking him from the depths. A second joined it, hauling him up into her hold as he coughed and sputtered and the world snapped back into motion. “Lyrin’a! Goddess, are you alright!? Cough it out, come on.”
For a moment, all he could see was dark auburn hair and two deep green eyes, narrowed in concern. Tael peered at him, loosening her hold when another of their sisters reached them and began thumping him on the back. “Turn loose Tael, you’re crushing him. He’s alright, see? Maybe not a water catte though.” “Nyani hush.” She admonished, curling tiny Lyrin’a into her arms and lifting him out of the water. Eldest of the many siblings, she often came to his rescue. “Lets get you warmed up, hm?” Lyrin’a twined his arms around her neck, pushing his nose into warm tawny skin while she patted his back.
Once they were away from the others she coudn’t help but chuckle in that way that relief of panic made you. “Nyani might be right. But don’t tell her I said as much.”
