This is why I could never move across the bridge to NYC, b/c NYC is completely out of control. Here's a 3bd, 3ba, apt. in Queens, NYC, built in 1930. Bad enough that they want $1.248M for it, but the damned HOA is $4,015mo. How insane is that? Plus, you can't just buy it, you have to put in an application and get HOA board approval first. (I suspect I wouldn't get in, anyway.)

Look at the hike from the lobby, alone. Does the HOA provide a shuttle for grocery shopping days?

Looks like it's been freshly painted white. There's a foyer and an entrance hall.

Beautiful living room with nice big windows, a fireplace and built-ins.

Large formal dining room. Plenty of room for entertaining.

Lovely kitchen and there's a small area to eat in, plus a pantry.

The primary bedroom is spacious.

And, there's is nice little sitting room off of it.

Love that the bath is 1930s original.

The 2nd bedroom is also large.

And, it also has a beautiful en-suite.

The 3rd bedroom is a good size for a nursery or a home office. It has a sink in the corner.

The sink is in the corner, b/c there isn't any in the bath. Looks like one would fit in there, though.

It's a gorgeous building and apt., but completely out of reach.

Willow was evicted from her previous apt. b/c of her pet possum, Nugget. Now, she shows off her new $3,000 mo. apt. in Hells Kitchen, New York City.

She loves her Manhattan abode so much, she swears she’ll never move. The pre-war building does have a lot of charm.

The unit has lots of storage space.  Nugget even has his own wardrobe of tiny outfits on tiny hangers. “I figured since I had so many wardrobes it was only fair,” said Willow.

Megan and David live in a small apt. in Queens, New York City with their family of 5, plus 2 cats. It wasn’t the apt. they wanted, but they decided to take it and make it their own.

"It’s definitely a space that has BIG main character energy for all of the vibrant characters and personalities in the house, including the cats," Megan says. 

They spend a lot of time at home so she wanted to create a colorful and whimsical space that makes her happy when she sees it, all the time.

She was inspired by the colors and textures of the 70s.

The rattan chairs lasted 6+ yrs. already with 3 growing rambunctious kids. 

Megan says they need all the storage they can get and use baskets on top of and under things. 

They also try to buy furniture with storage, like the orange swivel chairs that have compartments inside. 

They’ve made their home their escape from the world.

Outside it’s a busy street in Queens but inside it’s a colorful paradise where they have fun and spend time together.

Megan’s decorating tip: Don’t be afraid of color and remember that decorating a home is a marathon not a sprint.

She used a lot of bright, colorful wallpaper and it’s all removeable. 

Her proudest DIY is the round fringed mirror, an IKEA hack.

As far as painting goes, Megan says taking a weekend and a bucket of Kilz to paint back when it comes to moving out — it’s 100% worth it to not look at beige / taupe walls everyday.

To save space in the kids’ room, they decided on a pull down screen, rather than a TV. 

How lucky, though, to have a big deck like this.

Greg’s 700 sq. ft. apt. in Brooklyn, New York City. “I’m a queer writer, known for my flamboyant style, and my home is a reverberation of that," Greg said.

He says his style is best described as “if a wildly homosexual kindergartener had access to a credit card.” The biggest indulgence was the hot pink couch.

It’s all about color for Greg. He loves dusty yellows, greens, pinks — anything that looks like it could be found in or around a diner and/or gas station from the ’80s.

He named this custom-made table, “Angelyne.”

This is his proudest DIY- putting the book case together.

There are books everywhere- over 100 on top of the kitchen cabinets. They are organized in a way that’s pleasing to the eye, but also sustainable.

This is the first time he has a bedroom large enough so that he can have a bigger bed. 

And, the balcony is like a dream. 

He ordered everything online and there was a lot of returning and exchanging going on for a while, but eventually it all worked out.

More books. The floating shelves are a favorite purchase b/c they’re so useful.

He also likes lots of plants.

Ryan’s been in his maximalist 650 sq. ft. apt. for 10 years.  Everything in his space has a story.

He looks to museums for inspiration. Then he adds in yard sales, old tools from workshops, and artwork that he likes.

The kitchen has a great brick wall. 

If you look carefully you’ll probably find something that makes you cringe, b/c Ryan collects a little of everything.

"Your home should be distinctly yours, not just a showroom set you bought and called it a home. All items that make people think,” says Ryan.

 His biggest indulgence is light fixtures. Who doesn’t love a huge chandelier?

He tries to remember that he lives in a NYC-sized apartment and not some Golden Age Manor.

His friends say, “Wow, who dusts all this?”

You would think that this “pink palazzo” is in Europe, but it was an artist’s home in Greenwich Village, New York City, that he named “Palazzo Chupi,” the pink palace in the sky. The large picture of the full building shows that it’s definitely in New York City, and it’s so interesting. 

It’s a big building and has more than one apt., of course. This one was the artist Julian Schnabel’s home. The downstairs the entrance hall looks old industrial and rustic. Another apt. in the building looks entirely like this w/the rustic wood walls.

But not this one. On the uppermost floor is his fabulous apt., surrounded by a patio. Isn’t the fireplace fabulous?

The patio around the building is venetian inspired.

Love the black & white flooring that even extends out on the patio in some areas.. The dining table is in front of a window with great views of the city.

The tub also has a window with a view.

The black & white galley kitchen looks like it’s hardly used.

The rooms are full of Schnabel’s art, of course.

Every room has access to the outdoors.

The pink bedroom definitely looks like it’s in a villa.

The building also has an indoor pool.

Just when you think that NYC real estate isn’t ridiculous enough, this drops. They are calling it a “penthouse” apt., b/c it’s a top floor walk-up. And, it’s a “diamond in the rough,” b/c YOU get the opportunity to RENOVATE it. Here’s the catch: It’s 2 apts. separated by the hall, as you can see here, so you have to join them together, for only $1.5M. Come on, now. 

So, this is the living room in one of the apts. The ad says, “Bring your imagination and bring your designer… not to mention (okay I know I already mentioned it) the location!!” (It’s on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.)

You get 2 bedrooms, one in each apt. 

Across the hall, the living room in the other apt. Oh, and clearly 2 tenants are going to be kicked out.

The situation in this side, is that the shower is in the kitchen closet across from the island, next to the sink. 

And, on the other side of the sink, still in the kitchen, is the toilet closet. And, the buyer gets to combine the two, reconfigure them, and spend who knows how much more money, for a walk-up building, no doorman, elevator, or any of the luxury amenities. 

The 2nd TEENY bedroom is on this side. Your building amenities include a roof deck, laundry and a bicycle room, and it comes with a live-in super.
