Winding, hilly streets lined with stucco homes in styles from Craftsman to Spanish Revival characterized the charming neighborhoods we explored in Oakland.

We headed to Lake Merritt to check out some modern architecture. Luminous, minimal and dramatic, the Cathedral of Christ the Light it didn’t disappoint. Designed in the 90s by Craig Hartman, the cathedral’s glass and wood structure takes the vesica piscis or “fish” symbol of early Christianity as its organizing structure. Beautiful!

Two blocks of restored Victorian homes dating from the late 1800s have been repurposed to house innovative businesses and provide an architecturally elegant backdrop for special events.

Oakland definitely rated highest on the literary reference meter. First there was Jack London Square, and then we met Eurydice, the enthusiastic, dedicated owner of James and the Giant Cupcake. Far more uplifting than the Orpheus myth, Eurydice’s story is one of passion, hard work and delicious success. She opened her brick and mortar cupcake shop to rave reviews in 2008 and wisely hasn’t looked back since. Try the sea salt caramel cupcakes!

Surprising fact we learned in Oakland – the first fortune cookie was made in California in 1920. Go figure! You can tour the Fortune Cookie Factory for $1, which also happens to be the best deal we've come across.
