Does anyone else with OCD get one of those moments where you feel like you’re compelled to do something, but aren’t sure what you feel compelled to do, or why you’re compelled to do it?
What People Think OCD Is: Simply repeating an action, like tapping on the floor. Maybe washing our hands to make sure they’re clean
What OCD Actually Is: It’s actually pretty scary. Your mind basically tells you that if you don’t do a certain action, then something bad is going to happen. You think that doing the action will calm you down, but what it actually does is make you associate the action with that scary thought, making you wanting to perform the action every time you think about it.
Heck, OCD can also make you lose sleep and become completely fearful. Intrusive thoughts take over your mind that are very difficult to get rid of. Certain OCD actions can make you late for things, and take up a heck of a lot of your time, and sometimes, even if you do said action, you’re not completely satisfied, and you have to do it again
OCD Advice
If you ever feel compelled to do something an even number of times, tell yourself to do it again after midnight. Why? Because by then, you’ll have technically only have done it an odd number of times that day, which cannot be changed, and that might help you feel less compelled
Me: Things are going okay, maybe I won't even be late this time!
OCD: Ha! We'll see about that!
what i mean by ‘obsessive-compulsive’ traits
i do not and have never claimed to have obsessive-compulsive disorder (and i certainly don’t throw around the “omg i’m so ocd about” blah blah). however, i recently realized that i do in fact live my life by certain ‘rules’:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Three in every hundred Australians (equal to 450, 000 people) will develop Obsessive Compulsive Disorder at some point in their lives. World Health Organisation reported that OCD became one of the top 20 causes of illness related disability for ages 15-44 years of age. Cases of OCD are most likely to be diagnosed during childhood and adolescence.
