Mara is back and so is my hyperfixation wheeeeee!!
What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?
Coming back to an old oc after years of inactivity naturally leads to a lot of new discoveries but I think some of my favorites are that she no longer has a drug addiction, her dead fiance has been demoted to a dead boyfriend, and a half brother spawned in an au after almost a decade of having her as an only child.
What is your favorite fact about your OC?
Her father is Admiral Hackett!! He calls her every 5 minutes during the events of Mass Effect 1 because "he has missions only she can do" but secretly he just misses his daughter now that she's actually Important at Work. She goes by Shepard, her mother's name, in an attempt to keep people from immediately associating her with Hackett for both of their sakes. He and Hannah are tremendously proud of her, though.
What is your main focus when creating an OC - making a character for yourself and your own enjoyment? Or do you try to create a character that will be popular with others or attract a lot of attention?
OC Creation Asks!
Well, in my opinion, I think if you are chasing popularity or notoriety, then you’re going to be ultimately disappointed. You’re never going to please everyone, and I think you’re only going to hurt yourself in the long run when you try to create with other people in mind. That’s my advice to anyone wanting to create their own OC.
Every single one of my OCs I’ve ever created were to please myself, no one else. Not every OC that I’ve created has captured the attention of others, and that’s okay! I ultimately have wanted to make myself happy, and if others happen to like it too, then that’s a bonus!
Actually, I think I’ve gotten way more self indulgent over the years, going from “I want to write a well written character with a fascinating backstory, with major flaws, and then redeem them after they’ve hit rock bottom” to “Screw it, I want to make a character that I identity with, and one that I can be as self indulgent as I possibly can”. I went from trying to write a character that was, in my opinion, well written and interesting, to one that I am so damn happy with and I didn’t care if no one else liked.
And you know what? I couldn’t be happier. Best choice I ever made for myself in the FFXIV fandom.

A zora based off a tiger shark that left Zora’s Domain to travel the land in search of a means to cure his seemingly endless hunger. Thanks to his strength and intimidating appearance, there’s no worrying about monster attacks! So far he’s had no luck in finding a cure, but while he’s out he’s decided to taste the cuisine found in other towns. He’s developed quite the palate!
...but so far, his favorite food happens to be the hylians he meets on his travels. Gorons aren’t exactly palatable and Rito are a bit too feathery for his tastes. Not that he intends to prey on them mind you, but when he’s hungry he tends to get a bit ravenous and instincts take over. Sometimes he spooks startled prey, but he settles down with a full belly and always lets them out afterwards.

Some people might see Kitt as a little reckless. Kitt himself thinks it’s perfectly reasonable to venture to the edge of an active volcano (🌋) to take a selfie with flowing lava. And although he’ll admit it was a little impulsive, he also thinks the purchase he made while drunk (🥴) was perfectly reasonable. Besides, Sssandra, his new boa constrictor (🐍), is lovely company for his crazy adventures.
OC creation asks: 3, 8, 14, 18 for Tavi, Adi, and Charity?
3. How did you choose their name?
Adi’s just because I thought Adela was pretty(I found her surname, Tecali, on that fantasy name generator site while looking for Charity’s original surname)
Charity’s because a) I like it as a name and b) it seemed a fitting virtue for an Eothasian priest, which I think she actually says in The Honest Truth? Can’t remember...
Tavi... I honest to God don’t remember. I did rediscover there’s a character in one of Tim Zahn’s Star Wars novels named Tavia, so it’s entirely possible the name stuck in my subconscious after I read it the first time and I unintentionally “stole” it?
8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
Adi’s love of books came straight from me, as did Tavi’s love of the f-bomb(I’m trying to cut back, but it’s such a fun word to say) and a certain dark-haired wizard, and Charity’s habit of going along with what other people want regardless of her feelings(also, I too would totally have a crush on Edér if our first interaction was him helping me dig out a tree stump, just sayin’).
14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
Tavi is blunt AF and reckless beyond words, especially protecting people she cares about
Charity is a healer and tends not to drink alcoholic stuff bc READCERAN UPBRINGING :D
Adi is talkative, cheerful, and tends to throw caution to the wind when discovering new things
18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?
Oh, gosh.... I don’t really remember for Tavi.
Adi it’s the ink stains thing. She kinda pointed that out to me a couple months back, with all the research and note-taking she’s done throughout her life, ink stains are a very real possibility.
And Charity... how much she wants kids. I knew she wanted kids, but I didn’t realize it was Monica Geller levels of wanting kids. (Edér’s on board with that plan, and this is me we’re talking about, so they’re getting at least one. Eventually.)

For Ayla and Sammen please! Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind? How did you choose their name? In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?Ayla came about because I wanted an alienage inquisitor, so I guess in that respect she took all the characters into consideration? But particularly Solas probably since his relationship with the inquisitor would change the most if we went with a different elven origin since it changes the most with a Dalish inquisitor. Which is one of the reasons she ended up being elf-blooded.
Sammen came about after playing through the alienage origin for DAO and I realized a big factor in growing up in an alienage was the tight knit community. Since a lot of the original DAO alienage characters wouldn’t be available for showing that with Ayla and/or would be the wrong ages to have that sort of “we have been friends for a million years” connection with her.
How did you choose their name?Ayla is an ‘a’ name. Again. It’s a long chapter in the baby names book, yeah? It also means ‘oak’, which is the kind of tree vhenadahl’s commonly are. It’s also the one kind sylvan you meet in the Brecilian Forest (even if he does only speak in rhyme), AND an oak tree gets mentioned again in Asunder. Either someone at Bioware really likes acorns, or oak has some sort of significance that hasn’t been talked about yet. I have no qualms about borrowing that for my character.
Sammen is named for Samwise Gamgee!
In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?Obviously the alieange played a huge part. Their ages (21/22 ish) were picked so that I could line up their childhoods with what we know is true about the Denerim alienage. Which is also where they’re from because that’s the only alienage we get to know as a character, there’s the one in Kirkwall but that’s more of just a setting since most of the story that unfolds there is based in the Dalish clan rather than the alienage community.
If you're stuck for ideas when creating an OC, what do you do to inspire yourself? (if you never have this problem, then what would you advise to someone that did!)

Well, the first thing I’ll try to figure out is the cause. Am I sick or otherwise feeling unwell? Am I stressed out about something IRL? Am I feeling burned out in some way? If it’s any of those reasons, then I will put away my drafts for a day or two, and I’ll focus on something else that will distract me. Then I can return to my WIPs with fresh eyes, and that has worked well for me over the years.
If it’s none of the above and the problem really is with the writing itself, then that’s a different issue. I will try to do what I call “inspirational research”, which is when I will start to either rewatch films or tv shows, or listen to music, or play FFXIV or even another game, and then I might get an idea that is related to an idea from other media. That is to say that I’m not trying to copy from other media, but I tend to get inspired by other media, and then I can turn that into something that is my own that I can use for my own writing. For example, the Ishgardian ball that I plan on writing in the future was inspired by rewatching Disney’s live-action Cinderella.
