New Cover For Too Small To Be Afraid

The results of the poll are in! A majority of you said you wanted to see the new cover art, so here it is!

Agh I keep looking at this and seeing stuff I wanna fix >:( 'tis the life of an artist

This is the cover I will (probably (most likely (assuming I don't cave and draw the whole thing over again from scratch or hire another artist))) use for publishing the book!

(This drawing went through so many iterations and adjustments it's not even funny. You do not want to see my layers panel. On top of that I changed my coloring style *after* coloring this, so it's bugging me that it isn't up to date with my current style. :/)

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy! Please let me know your thoughts! :D

Flora came back from work (feeling like crap because pregnancy) and saw that her Dad was there.

Robert: Oh hey, honey! I brought you a bunch of stuff you'll need for your baby!

Flora: Damn it, Blaise! I told him that I was gonna tell you in person!

Robert: Oh honey, you know that boy can't keep his mouth shut for a second. Anyway, call me if you need anything!

Flora: I will, thanks Dad.

Robert would liked to have said he could count on one hand the times he found Cal in his home before he got back from work. He’d like to say maybe he left her a text that she never got back to until the next day. He would love to say he had her saved as ‘Ms Calypso’ and she probably had him saved as ‘Robin’s Father’.

Because if all those things were true, his heart would not be in such a perilous situation.

If all those things were true, he’d be a lonely old man with aches and pains and no one to make him think of anything else. Did he wish that were true? God, no. But it just made sense to him.

But the smell of paprika and meat and one of his many records playing from the kitchen, he knew she was here. Again. Like before, and the evening before that, and the two nights before that. Robert went through his ritual of removing his coat and his shoes, sliding into his smoking slippers and making way to the kitchen. “You put on one of my records.” He accused, flatly, and Cal looked over at him. His joking anger was short lived at the sight of her: not in her usual get-up, but something far more casual. Loose cotton shirt, a long skirt with a hefty slit. Her own slippers that seemed to live here now. 

“And what of it?” she responded in kind, turning the steaks, and making sure to stir the veg. “Good day?”

It was okay. Robert closed the gap, his free hand sliding comfortable around her waist as she continued to watch the food, “It’s nearly midnight. You expect me to eat all this?”

“Have you had dinner?” she asked, not looking at him. No response about work meant that nothing went wrong, so Cal would accept him skipping it completely. He didn’t respond again, and finally she turned her head to look at him. But his gaze was so soft, so lost in every part of her, that it caught her off guard. Cal smiled, an awkward laugh following, “What?”

“No, I haven’t had dinner.” Robert chose to answer only one question again. 

“Then we eat a bit of this - because Lord knows I can’t make you go straight to bed after anyway - and take the rest for lunch.” she had decided this all for him already, he realised. He’ll still have some emails to catch up on, and maybe some more legal work to confirm. Some last minute things he didn’t get to during working hours. Something about the statement made Robert’s chest feel tight. 

He tried not to sound like a petulant child, “I’d go to bed.” what child fought for sleep? “Are you tired?”

“No sweetpea.” she set the steaks on the plates, and began to delegate the veg. More carrots for her, and she picked out some extra pepper slices for his plate. “I don’t start ‘till late shift tomorrow, so I can sleep in.”

Before she could pick up the plates, Robert pulled at her, forced her to face him. He looked quite serious - even if his cheeks were flushed a pink. “Are you okay?” she repeated her concern more clearly.

“More than okay.” Robert hooked his cane on top of the counter, freeing up his other hand to snake around her completely. Cal’s hands found their place curling around his forearms, “Thank you, Mary.” It was her turn to blush, and Cal cleared her throat. She never needed thanked for caring for Robert. She liked to cook, she liked his home, she liked him. What else was there to say? “I… You’re very good at looking after me.”

What a dumb thing to say.

But she seemed aptly prepared for the statement. As if she had thought about it, many times. About him, and about what he wanted, and needed:

“It’s because I want to.” 

And it made sense.

“I want to be able to do the same. Give you whatever you want-”

“Oh, honey.” Cal reached to his cheek, “You comin' home to me is what I want.”

“I can do that.” Robert confirmed, “I can do whatever you want.”

Life would be quieter for Cal if no one had stepped into it the same way Robert had. So dull. But as she sat opposite him, watched him fill up her wine glass, she could see the glow he gave - not just for anyone. A soft but unmistakable light in the darkness of the world. For her, anyway.
