SPOILERS FOR THE BACKROOMS MOVIE IM SORRY BUT I MUST POST ABOUT IT OWONUOUONUOIRUNOUOI IUO
i watched this movie yesterday and good lord its so amaizng i love it so much its so good i mean yes it does have faults like the ending felt a little fast and rushed but like overall this is one of thebest movies ive seen in year and particularly one of the best thriller movies for that matter. this was so amazing id 100000000000000000000000000000% recoment it you can ask my mutual bugy who i just said this to
as you can see i liked it a normal amount.
im listening to the soundtrack rn and DEAR LORD IM SO THRILLED RN ITS ACTUALLY SO AMAZING. i thought the sound design and the ost in the movie whilst in the theatres was amazing during the movie but upon listening to the ost with headphones on OIEUWNOUIREWN ITS SO GOOD. its clearly a homage to some of the classic weirdcore and backrooms songs that we all know and love and i cant help but feel so giddy at stuff like that being repurposed and remastered for the sake of a feature film. Not only is it clearly a love letter and a homage to all the liminal songs, but it also sets the tone just SO well that even for people who havnt been invested in the genre for years can enjoy and get a feel for it (im also hoping for maybe an uptick in weirdcore and liminal playlists.... wink wink nudge nudge).
im also particularly a fan of the fact that ONE OF THE SONGS FROM THE EVERYWHERE AT THE END OF TIME ALBUM BY THE CARETAKER WAS USED FOR THE THEREAPIST'S MOM LIKE........ OHHH THAT WAS SO GOOD AND IM NOT SEEING ANYONE TALK ABOUT IT. ITS SO GOOD BECAUSE NTO ONLY IS THE ALBUM A STAPLE LIMINAL ALBUM IN GENERAL BUT THE ALBUM WAS ORIGIONALLY A PIECE MADE TO SHOW THE HORROR OF DIMENTIA. WHICH THE BACKROOMS NOT ONLY ENCAPSULATES PERFECTLY BUT ALSO REPRESENTS THE ACTUAL DETERIORATION OF HER MOTHER'S MENTAL STATE sorry i just loved that a lot
and the fact that the buzzing of the above lights could always (iirc) be heard was soso so sosoooooo great to me because imo its SUCH a staple feature of the backrooms and it would feel wrong to NOT have them
i also LOVED SO MUCH that we got some CLEAR influence from some of the most popular liminal photos. let me see if i can find them hold
namely:
which *finger up emoji im on computer rn* we could ACTUALLY see a shot of at some point in the movie during a chase scene i believe and i was the only one in the theater who caught it.
this image has always been my favorite because i used to live in an apartment like this. i can basically still remember the smell of the place, before we moved there and on the way out. anyway im pretty syre that the basement of the guy's store was meant to sort of resemble this though i could be reaching on it
iirc this was shown in the trailer and i gsped out loud when i saw it. wasnt shown in the movie EXACTLY but when th emonster was chasing the therapist around and she landed in a room the the stairs going up to the cieling it reminded me of this
while no particular photo was referenced i dont believe, i did love hat the pool rooms themselves were referenced in the one section where store owner guy and his assistant manager were talking but couldnt get to one another (yes i don remember anyones names sorry). whats even cooler is the fact that the pool rooms were a separate art project but got adopted into the backrooms anyway lol
dont get the wrong idea- from a movie standpoint it could 100% use some work. the writing was a little rushed for sure and some things could have been done better. however, in the sense of capturing the feeling of experiencing the idea of the backrooms for the first time.... revisiting and making that fear even More instilled in you once again after it being dulled for so long....... the movie does an AMAIZNG job. the set design.. the acting... when they brought up a camera and started recording the surroundings like god intended.... that had me giddy in the theatres dude i was so hyped.
and the best part was. this was the first horror move in YEARS to really SCARE me. i loved iron lung when i came out but that movie didnt scare me as much as it did fascinate me. THIS MOVIE? guh
it wasnt exactly just the setting.... but the tone of the place def helped. not to #ventonmain (as if i have other blogs for that) but the pirate monster scared the shit out of me. The apartment setting full of lighting that could be described as near dusk like, mixed in with the figure of a tall bearded man who was clearly hostile Hit A Cord you could say. the vision of being chased around by this monster with the intent to hurt looming over the therapist terrified me and i think thats amazing. i wouldnt trade the experience for the world.
this movie can be a hit or miss depending on the person but oh boy was it a HIT for me like ive been thinking about it since ive gotten home ive been thinking about it today ive had it in my dreams im listening to the soundtrack rn and going nuts over it im thinking about my characters and the backrooms im thinking about hypotheticals all over the place. lets justr say...... im back in my element.............................. Hellooooo 2020 me welcome home!!
