Why Denmark has no public transport
Here is a snapshot I took on my way to the kiosk in the middle of the night. Ofcoarse the shuttlebusses are busy as always. This is in Darnitsa, suburbs of Kiev.
This post is written out of anger. Anger because the public transportation system in Denmark is so stupid that debate is needed. Actually It would be wrong to call It "public transport" because prices now are so outragous that the only public thing about It, is the discomfort during rushhour.
The Ukranians look at the danish busses and trains, and they think "wow... awesome !". Well...yes.. sure, a brand new Volvo bus, or IC4 looks great, but the Ukranians only see the chrome and the paint. Actually the Ukranian way of solving the problem with public transport is alot more effective and much much cheaper. Im using Kiev as an example here. I will not use Sofia/Bulgaria as an example, because they are already too western and messed up.
But Kiev is not good at everything. Where the public transport is great (not fancy, but it works), the lack of bicycle lanes is a problem. Kiev still have better means of transport though.
So... a list here using Copenhagen and Kiev as examples, since Copenhagen is the only real city in Denmark. So focus here is on urban transpotation. But further down a small note on how the stupidity in Denmark affects less populated areas.
Copenhagen:
S-trains: Very effective, but overpriced, and too many violent conductors.
Subway: Works great, but covers only part of the small city. Project is way over budget, and again overpriced tickets. Nice conductors though.
Busses: Overpriced tickets. 23 dkk for 2 zones.
Bicycle lanes: Works fantastic
Taxis: Insane prices. Expensive cars, and they bitch because they want more customer. They need a reality check
Bicycle taxis: More of a tourist thing. Could be made effective though.
Kiev:
Subway: Cheap and covers a large area. Old cars, but effective.
Shuttlebusses: Brilliant solution. A good flow, cheap, and passengers help with payment during the ride, ensuring a faster transit.
Marshrutka: Small vans. Again very effective because they ensure transportation in areas where the subway is not an option.
Trams: Trams are great and insanely cheap. Old, but the iron monsters keep rolling, slow but steady.
Taxis: Cheap, or you can make a deal with the driver. So I think taxis in Kiev are sort of public transport as well.
Black taxis: well.. sometimes good, sometimes bad. When you really need one, It is good. Sharpen your teeth and get the right price.
Hitchiking: works great in the dacha (garden houses, but large areas. Not like Denmark). Illegal, but It works. Pay the driver a small amount, or pay nothing.
Bottom line. The east block way of doing thing are far more flexible, because the goal is to solve problems. Also the whole marked is more flexible. Less rules and a more dynamic culture, means that when there is a need, something will happen to make It work. Not always by the book, but that is where Denmark fails completely.
Unfortunately Kiev is becoming more and more western, and It breaks my heart to see western stupidity take over. Low salaries are okay as long as you can live, eat, drink, and move around. When these basic things are stripped from people with low income, well.. you dont have to be a genius to see the problem in that.
Denmark is just choking itself in rules and regulations as always. Prices should be half of what they are now. The absurd thing is that people buy more cars then ever before, so obviously fancy overpriced public transportation is not the answer.
When It comes to less populated areas in Denmark, the strict way of doing things really become a problem. Private companies get the deals, and again the solution is less options and large busses, where the marshrutka or shuttlebus would be a perfect solution. Local initiatives would be a way to make It work. But with the abundance of laws a regulations, that would prove almost impossible.
Denmark has no public transport, unless you think Limos fall into that category.
