Gonna be honest I was kind of expecting that someone would correct Jack but I appreciate that instead we all agreed to let him go on believing that cock and ball torture is a form of therapy

The Revenge had good sails. It was clear that they were just one more of the little things about the ship that Stede had gone all out on. Good sails. Sturdy wood for the mast, something with more flex and give for the hull. Fucking... plumbing...somehow? Ed didn't know.
But the sails. They had been good. He sniffed and pushed some of his hair out of his face. He had a panel of one of the shredded sails pulled into his lap, as if he could actually do anything even remotely resembling a repair to it. It wasn't even like they needed this particular sail. They'd already taken sails off of a ship, in another one of Stede's relatively benign raids.
Well, taking someone's sails was a pretty dick move if you weren't going to outright kill them, but he hadn't said anything. Not that he'd been in a position to, all but dead and hidden away like a bad memory, at the time.
He pushed the needle he was using through the canvas and started to sew. Izzy had taught him how years ago. Another fucking lifetime. And it had been a lifetime since he'd sat on the deck of a ship engaged in a menial task like this.
The bell was new. So was the rice sack onesie Wee John had made. Just for him.
"Am I part of the stop pissing people off thing?" he muttered to himself, concentrating on bringing the two sides of the hole he was working on together. "Because that's not fucking working. Pissing myself off, right now."
It was easier to be patient and quiet when someone was sitting next to him, expecting him to be patient and quiet. Even if that person was snoring.
"Pissed right the fuck off," he continued, then paused when he registered that someone was walking towards him. He lifted his head and looked up, doing his best to mask the look of irritation on his face.
"Mm?"

Stede looked up at the sails, watching them hanging slack and swaying with the movement of the ocean herself instead of the winds. The crew had done... something... he didn't quite understand, tacking the sails in the hope of a breeze when none was coming.
They were "becalmed". Stede understood what that meant, of course. He'd read about it. But like many things he had read about living at sea and pirating, the words on the page had failed to capture the reality of it.
There was something unnerving about the stillness. Yes, the ship was shifting under foot. The water would move her regardless of the whims of the wind, but it was... different. More subtle. The lapping of the waves against the hull was a hollow sound. He could hear the crew talking to each other without having to strain for it. Belatedly, he realized that he hadn't really strained to hear in awhile. He must have adjusted to the noise of the ship. That adjustment was part of what made the silence creep beneath his skin.
He walked to the side of the ship and set his hand on the gunnel, looking out to sea rather than directly at the person he addressed.
"So...How long does this kind of thing usually last, exactly?"
