My step-dad was just in prison for over a year and I'm dying over how unintelligent she sounds and how misinformed about America's prison system she is. Holy woooow.
I know, right? My mother spent time in jail when she was younger. A lot of it. Not the same but in some ways it’s worse, because it’s even more restrictive. My brother has been in prison. My cousin and boyfriend are in prison right now. The guy who attacked me and left me for dead is obviously in prison and I talk to his mother a lot. Not because I like him, I really don’t, but I don’t feel it’s fair that he’s working 12-15 hours in a workshop cutting granite that sells for hundred of dollars a slab and yet only makes about 70 cents a day.
First of all, do you know how long it will take him to pay off the damage he did to my home at that rate? About forty-five years. Aka, it’s never going to happen. Because he’s making less than $25 a fucking month and frankly, that’s slavery in my eyes. I literally feel so angry about how they treat prisoners in the American prison system that I’m supervising the treatment of this complete fucking stranger who tried to kill me.
My trauma specialist worked in prisons before he came to my clinic, and we regularly talk about the state of the American prison state and it’s like... I could laugh so hard at her assumptions that are fuck all wrong. But I’m totally naive, don’t you know! Like you don’t get a choice to not work. Yeah, there’s TVs, but it’s called 90 inmates are watching them at once and they’re usually bolted to something. If they have them in their cells? They bought them after earning the privilege of having them, likely because they were nonviolent during their tenure. Prisons don’t just hand out HDTVs for funsies. Taxpayers don’t pay for TVs. Hell, do you think with the prices of shit in the prison that they aren’t going to take ‘em for all their worth?

and shit i mean it’s not like certain parts of the country have been so abandoned by industry and education like south los angeles is? and are so struck by the economic desolation of their situation, that the only longterm sustainable income people have are a) whoring, b) selling drugs, c) both.
it’s not like i don’t know ph.d. candidates that are paying their rent by selling drugs because they can’t make ends meet between getting that piece of paper the research and work. because there’s only a finite amount of time in a day. and every one of them, if they were caught, because they are people of color? would have their lives destroyed for a few ounces of weed. while my cousin’s bf only goes to jail after his FIFTH time almost killing someone but WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT THE JUSTICE AND PRISON SYSTEM IN AMERICA
