Something about spilling your breakfast and feeling queasy around the complementary seafood buffet had you suspicious for the last few days. Yet, you didn't expect to be greeted by two solid red lines, having ogled the test for a minute before settling on the conclusion that you were in fact pregnant.
Freddy was currently on a scouting mission, having received a signal about Vanny's recent endeavors. Shooting a simple message containing the loaded news didn't seem right to you. Not as personal or genuine. He would most likely be too busy to see or respond.
You would prefer it if he were here, but from what he had explained, it would take a few weeks between transit and the occupation to return. At first, you weren't bothered by gaps of time without him. However, with the recent pregnancy discovery, your head spun trying to guess when he would come back.
The days dragged its feet alongside you, trying to keep yourself busy. Your fellow crew members caught glimpses of you every so often, skittish and sometimes absently feeling over your undeveloped tummy. You worried you were showing, despite just discovering the news, still in the early days.
You spent the lonely nights wondering what you would look like the further along you went, how things would change. Deep down, you feared it wouldn't sustain itself, or work out. You and Freddy talked about having kids, he spoke on his minimal experience with Gregory, while you had little knowledge on raising one. Seeing the tykes in the daycare always made your teeth rot, but internally, you were relieved you didn't have to raise a child.
Maybe it was a mistake?
He was already responsible for running not only a ship, but a colony. Having people who relied on him. The ongoing journey to find his family.
You thought yourself to be selfish to expect him to drop everything and draft a new life with everything on his plate.
You cried into his empty spot of the bed, clinging onto his dim scent, unsure if you yourself were suited for any of it. Even with the relentless tears, you were never lulled into a peaceful sleep…
The mention of the captain's return had you practically dropping everything you were doing and hurrying towards the docking port. A monitor scolding you for your lack of decorum, but you barreled by. The Fazforce members treaded from the shuttle's incline, exhausted but in high spirits, Freddy in the midst of them.
Upon seeing you, his bleary gaze lifted as he ran to hug you. Your arms swaddled around his clunky suit, he nuzzled into your neck, both of murmuring tender greetings. Monty trailed by with a begrudging scoff, “It ain't even been that long.”
Freddy ignored the lieutenant’s comment, continuing to sway you before putting you down.
“Three weeks can feel like forever when you have someone at home to come to.”
You beamed, cheeks tender by the time you left the docks. You had almost forgotten what you wanted to tell him, nerves boiled in your gullet at the reminder. Of course, you insisted that he get comfortable and rest after such a long trip.
In his chambers, you thoroughly listened to the details of his mission, the intense moments during. The nefarious crumbs Vanny left behind in her tumultuous wake. By the end of it, Freddy held a hopeful pitch, wanting nothing more than to close in on the rogue rabbit. And you shared his sentiment as well, rubbing his shoulder to soothe him.
Your hand met his cheek and he melted upon impact, his eyes fixated on yours.
“Did I miss anything while I was gone?”
You sucked your lip, a warmth rose behind your neck as you took a second to pitch the words. You had so much time to think on what to say, and how to say it. Perhaps a whole spiel on what it might mean to be a potential parent. You were stuck, your eyes trailing aside. He tilted to meet them again.
“Was everything alright?” He asked gently, finger tracing your chin. A blurry film welled over your eyes, an influx of tension spilled from you, suddenly burying yourself into his chest as you wept. His subdued bemusement shifted to consolidation, enveloping you as he ushered, “Hey, hey, what's wrong?”
You falsely believed you had built a tolerance for his long absences, understanding this was what you signed up for upon dating him. Although, that wasn't the case now. Your fingers clung to his shirt, wet sniffles filling the space as he let you air out your tears. He rested his chin on the crown of your head.
You found your voice again, stifling, “I just missed you so much.”
Tightening his hold, he sighed above you, “I know…”
Thinking back on what Monty said, you scoffed weakly, “You've been gone much longer.”
“Yes, and regardless of the duration, I don't like being away from you or Gregory if I can help it.” He pulled back, his thumbs rubbing away your warm streaks. You hated how you lost your composure in front of him, but his comforting hold lessened your embarrassment.
Freddy's smile spread to your lips, your nerves slid away as he wiped your eyes and cheeks, “I would promise you both I would never leave if it meant you could be at peace.”
He saw your smile lessen, trying to keep his, although wondering if there was something else burdening you. You didn't know how else to say it, and decided it was best to rip the bandaid.
“While you were gone, I hadn't been feeling too well. I was late…” Your shoulders tensed, avoiding his gaze, “I didn't know how to really tell you this, and I didn't want to bother you while you were out, but—”
Freddy stopped you, which helped ground you and refocus. You sighed, ridding your shivers.
“I’m pregnant.”
He blinked, a twitch possessing his ear. You didn't know how he took it at first, but he honed in on you. Hands holding your arms as he sought for assurance, “Are you sure?”
You stiffly nodded.
A pair of thick arms pulled you in for an embrace, he heaved with excitement. You lost your breath from his constrictive hold. Amazement in his tone.
“I'm gonna be a dad?” He corrected, “I-I mean, I technically already am, but we're having a kid? You and me?”
Again, you nodded, and he retreated back to look you in the eyes. You had never expected to hear him squeal and laugh, not in a hearty manner. Your eyes pricked up with his, he held you close, resting on your forehead.
“We're going to be parents…” He almost didn't believe it, yet he murmured it softly. You chuckled, nodding into his shoulder.
He couldn't contain himself when he kissed you, and clung to you. He asked about when you found out, and admitted you learned it a week before his return. Subtle guilt rinsed his brows as he nudged into your neck.
“Why didn't you tell me sooner?”
You shrugged, “I was afraid it wasn't a good time. I didn't know what else to do.”
He huffed, not wanting to sit with it too long. You sensed the weight that lowered on his shoulders the longer he lingered on it. Instead, he drew back to peck your cheek, “None of that doesn't matter now. I'm here, and I'm with you.” You wiped a stray tear from his cheek.
He didn't want to let you go, not for the rest of the night. It got a tad bit smothering after some time, especially when you needed to pee…
When you came back to him, the bear opened his arms to grab and yank you into bed so he could continue. You didn't mind it at all, now that he was back right beside you. He kissed you, squeezing you with a loving might.
You nuzzled into his arms as his fingers drew circles along your back, until sleep caught up with both of you.
