yk. i think the thing that makes me roll my eyes the most at a lot of the recent fandom incidents(tm) is when people just act really incurious. like, no, gally going to VAN is not like that fictional guy going to ottawa, but you wouldn't know that absent any further information. it's the "can hockeytwt tell me if". it's the "is he gay and in love with his teammate", it's the "i need you all to pat me on the back because i've randomly designated this asian-canadian player shane hollander". no desire to find out for yourself, no interest in learning about these people or the sport they play - just asking other people to supply or congratulate the narrative you've already chosen to impose on a real-world event/person, and when they won't play ball the kneejerk response is to declare people "soft" and "homophobes" instead of asking why they're not willing to meet your expectations.

i don't expect people whose only exposure to hockey is HR to know a lot about the sport, it's not a fucking textbook and it's not trying to be. it's literally fine to enjoy the romance show/books for what they are. have fun! go nuts! but if you want to then try to interact with real hockey i do expect at least a modicum of curiosity and willingness to admit you don't know things. wanting to learn is cool and sexy is all and it's deeply frustrating that some of this fanbase would rather just dig their heels in and be racist and insensitive instead
